This season has stretched his renowned patience as much or more than any. The Los Ange- es Dodgers have made many miscues afield. They occupy third place in the National League West. Alston includes himself, however, when he says, "Everyone gets rednecked once in a while." Chronicled moments of Alston temper have been few, and the the door. M-year-old skipper refuses to volunteer instances, just confirm a couple related by others. lu the 1960s, he once stopped the team bus to "straighten out" players who griped because the Pittsburgh Pirates' bus was newer and air conditioned. He invited them outside one at a time or in groups. None accepted. "I don't even remember what year that was," he says. The Dodgers, bkoding veterans and rookies in 1971, finished one game behind San Francisco after falling as many as 11 games Aehind. Was Cincinnati underrated and Los Angeles overrated this spring? gether this year. The Dodgers have been unsettled much of the year, with lineup changes almost daiiy. Only last week did they seem to get untracked with a flvt- game winning streak, WALT ALSTON His Patience Stretched "I wasn't angry until they locked me out. That's the thing that made me a little sore," he recalls. The past June, Alston was described as genuinely upset at a team meeting--the worst, he had been since throwing several boxes of bubble gum in the clubhouse several years earlier. , "I just straightened out a few things," he says calmly. "If we're going to win, we have to play better. It's that simple." Alston wants to manage again in 1973. Only Connie Mack (1901-1950) and John McGraw (1902-1932) have managed longer with one team. "If Mr. O'Malley wants me back and I'm healthy, I can see no reason why I wouldn't do it again. Alston has been Associated Press Manager of the Year in $ See Charles E.
