Ethnic Salutes By Robert Jackson Citizens of the United States are honoring their forebears this Bicentennial summer in festivals featuring music, games, foods, dress and traditions from almost every nation. Americans will have many opportunities to salute the different peoples who contributed to building this nation. Some of the big-city 200th birthday celebrations last most of the summer; other festivals take place on weekends in small towns from coast to coast. Visitors will see parts of Old Country cultures--perhaps a dance step or costume--no longer in evidence in the country of origin, but lovingly preserved" by American descendants. More often they will note adaptations to New World ways and products, such as using raccoon oil in baking cookies. Planned for the pleasure of the entire family, most of the festivals are free or charge only nominal fees. Visitors are invited to participate in the festivities by sampling the food, taking part in games or contests, wearing national dress or joining in dancing and singing. Among the multi-national events suggested by United States Travel Service, the national government tourism office, are: ·-The summer-long Festival of American Folklife in Washington, D.C., with 5,000 people from about 50 countries presenting facets of their cultures as part of one of the nation's major Bicentennial events. ··Riverfront Ethnic Festivals with about 50 groups in Detroit focusing on their contributions to the city and nation in a series of weekend fests; »The Texas Folklife Festival in San Antonio, with about 26 ethnic groups coming together for the nation's largest all-siate ethnic festival, and some of its most unusual contests; ··Tenth A n n u a l F e s t i v a l S t . Louis, with groups from 20 countries demonstrating their unique foods and dances. Throughout the year such festivals are manifestations of the words on the nation's Great Seal E Pluribu^ Vnum ·-- "Out of Many June 20, 1976. Sundav Gazette-Mail
