"This has got to be one of my biggest thrills." said the fiery Martin, who was greeted by a loud chorus of cheers mixed with jeers when introduced to the Shea Stadium crowd during Old-Timers Day ceremonies prior to Saturday's game against the Cleveland Indians. "It's great to be back where it all started." Martin, who began his major league career as a player with the Yankees in 1950, was named to replace Bill Virdon as manager by club President Gabe Paul at a Saturday morning news conference. The Yankees are Martin's fourth managerial post in the majors in the past seven years. He led the Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers to pennants and the Texas Rangers to a second-place finish, but each time he was fired after a dispute with management. He was ousted from the Rangers post less than two weeks ago. "When everybody fires you, they try to explain why." said Martin, who felt his reputation as a fighter with management and others preceded him wherever he went. "But my track record speaks for itself." Yankee management is hoping Martin . will be able to arouse a club which had been expected to challenge for the American League's Eastern Division pennant, but which instead is lagging in third place. . Paul said Martin's availability was too much to pass up. "If Billy Martin hadn't been available. Bill Virdon would still be the manager of the Yankees," Paul said after concluding a whirlwind week of travel and telephoning that led to th'e announcement which began Saturday's news conference: "There has been a change of managers for the. New York Yankees. Billy Martin has been named." As Paul spoke, the manager's office had been cleared of Virdon's gear, making way for the new field boss. Virdon is not expected to remain with the c l u b . The bare locker was all that remained of his tenure, save the memories of last season--the best for the Yankees since they won their last pennant in 1964--and the gloom of the disappointing showing thus far in 1975. Martin was on a fishing trip in Glade Park. Colo., last week when he was reached by Paul, through Martin's father- · in law. Cy Winkler. They began negotiations Wednesday, reached agreement Friday and finally, at 1:30 a.m. Saturday, signed a contract making Martin the skipper of the New York Yankees through 1976. As the Yankee players drifted in before Saturday's game against the Cleveland Indians, they reflected on Virdon's achievements and non-achievements. "You hate to see anybody lose his job," said relief pitcher Sparky Lyle. "But his conscience can't hurt him. He,did the best job he possibly could." Lyle wasn't sure the Yankee players had done their best. "I spent two months watching guys come in here, look at the lineup card, not see their name on it and walk away sulking and hanging their heads, blaming Virdon," said Lyle. "What should he have done? Gone up to the guy and said, 'Gee, I'm sorry. This is the best guy to put in the lineup?' This club has a lot of talent. You've got to have a little pride in yourself; we should have taken it upon ourselves to play better." That might happen now, with the tempestuous Martin at the helm. Pitcher Pat Dobson, who openly feuded with Virdon. said. "Right now. no matter who's here, the change is enough to motivate the players. Psychologically, you want to go out and impress the new guy." Dobson added he did not think his differences with. Virdon had anything to do with the manager's dismissal, "If they did, that means that anywhere I go I have the power to have the manager fired. But I think it's a good move for the club. We're sort of dead out on the field these days, and it should give us a lift." Martin said he planned to keep the Yankee coaching staff, and that his immediate plans were to meet with the players and coaches. One of Martin's first meetings was with center fielder Elliott Maddox. who had differences with Martin when both were with the Rangers. M '*ey Mantle Cy Young Winner in 1974 This Year's Baseball Bum -AP Wirephoto LOS ANGELES (AP) - "Good luck is when preparation meets opportunity. Now. what would bad luck be?" Mike Marshall doesn't mince his words and his question, left dangling in the air. was answered by the reporter: "1 guess that's lack of preparation." "I think you've got it." said Marshall. But Marshall said he wasn't labeling his own recent problems a product of bad luck. He also wasn't making alibis. The fact is, however, that last year's Cy Young Award winner, the man who set a major league record of 106 appearances, is today a 6-11 pitcher, the loser of four straight. The man who once could be counted on for magic in the late innings has seemingly turned firebug. "I think his stuff is about as good as last year," said Manager Walt Alston, "but he hasn't been the luckiest guy. The ball seems to be going between the infielders and outfielders. "For example, in Atlanta the other day he struck out (Dusty) Baker on four pitches then (Larvell) Blanks hits one in the hole and the shortstop doesn't make the play and then (Rowland) Office hits one to the opposite field. I think Mike is a victim of circumstance." Marshall lost that one 11-10, giving up two runs in the ninth inning. The facts indicate that Marshall hasn't really been shelled: he's got a 3.27 earned run average, has walked just 27 and struck out 49 in 822-3 innings. "He's throwing about the same as last year." said catcher Steve Yeager. "Oh, maybe his control is a hair off and he's maybe not quite as sharp as last year, and maybe he's trying too hard. But more than anything I think it's bad luck. You can't guide the ball...but take that homer by Office. "Now he's not a home run type. He's a hit the ball on the ground and run like crazy guy." "I can't disagree with them," said Marshall, "but it's not exactly all bad luck. Let's give credit to the guys who get the hits, too. My job is to take the sting out of the bat. get them to hit the ball on the ground. OPENINC For a Construction Manager, Superintendent and Estimator.
