James K. Polk (1845-1849) Polk was perhaps the only president who achieved all the goals he · set. There were only four but they were on a grand scale. During his four years in office he added more territory to the United States than did any other president. Zachary Taylor (1849-1850) "Old Rough and Ready" was the hero of the Mexican-American War.
