-- August 3,1975* Sundav Gazette-Mail *^ r*.*.^iAtXn vv^t Vj-olnia-------- 5 Near-Record Fish Caught By One Angler In One Day A mid-summer look at fishing around the state: - Jerry Duffield of Strange Creek, a conservation aide in the wildlife resources division of the Department of Natural Resources, went fishing in Elk River below Ivydale last Sunday and, in one morning, caught an 11-inch rock bass, a 29-inch walleye and a 45-inch muskie. The walleye, which weighed 7'a pounds, was caught on a deep-running Rapala. and the muskie. a 22-pounder. was caught on a.Suick lure. -Jerry's dad. Harold Duffield of Ivydale. caught a 43-inch muskie in the same area last November. Elk River was in excellent shape last week in the Ivydale to Clay area, after being muddy through the best spring and early summer fishing months. From Sutton to Duck Creek, however, it continues to be turbid from bottom-water releases from Sutton Dam and from local thunderstorms. ;Elk was clear enough immediately below Sutton. however, for Bud Steele. a Pennsylvania!!, to catch a 31-inch. 11 l i- ppund walleye. Steele is the brother-in-law of Braxton County conservation officer Raymond Carson jr. ' W i l l i a m Brown of Ottawa. Boone County, set a new muskie record at East Lynn Lake last month with a catch of 36 inches. 11'-4 pounds. Last Thursday. Randall Hunnicut of Chapmanville caught a 36-inch. iO-pounder at East Lynn. · Bob Schaffer. manager of the East Lynn Boat Dock, said this had been a good sea- ·"son generally for muskie fishermen at the reservoir. Bass fishing has been slow lately, he added, but the few bass being caught 'have included some large ones. , By Skip Johnson Another indication that the stocking of northern pike in the Ohio River was successful was the catching of a 12-inch northern recently at Gallipolis Ferry. It was the first northern caught in that area, said DNR fish biologist Steve Muth. Annual Summer Slump Reservoir fishing is into its summer slump due to clear, warm water and an abundance of food. DNR fish biologist Bert Pierce says the reservoir fishing should pick up again around the start of hunting season or after the first two or three frosts, whichever comes first. The 3-foot lowering of the summer water level at Sutton Reservoir, being tried by the Corps of Engineers as an experiment to determine if it will help improve fishing conditions downstream, has resulted in some additional shoreline turbidity, according to Pierce, but he said it cannot be determined on the basis of one season whether it proves beneficial downstream. The cleanup of debris at Sutton Lake being done by Ed Clark and his Bee Run Boat Dock crew, under contract with the Corps of Engineers, has the lake "in the best shape I've ever seen." according to Dave Peay, a Charleston Newspapers em- ploye who fished at Sutton last weekend. A creel survey at Stonecoal Lake in Lewis County turned up evidence that wal- ·*· Sutton Dam Comments *" _ Asked by Elk League r-'CORTON -- Elk Basin Improvement League members were urged Saturday to submit comments on a legislative resolution concerning operation of Sutton Dam. """League president Carl Murrey said the resolution, which was adopted on March 8. contained the following recommendations: *Rate of change of discharge from Sutton Dam be reduced from current .guideline of one foot per hour change in downstream water depth. ··Suttpn Lake be raised to summer pool stage at a much slower rate. leye fishing was excellent during May and June. The stocked walleyes are now in the 13 to 17-inch size range. One of the lesser publicized lakes that offers reasonably good fishing is Big Ditch near Cowen. An 11'4-pound channel catfish was caught there recently. It also contains largemouth bass, bluegills and crappie. » * * Brookies Building Up Of interest to trout fishermen is the report that a series of wet years in West Virginia has built up the native brook trout fishing in the Monongahela National Forest. However, anglers who catch native brookies are very secretive about it. because a good brook trout stream is as rare as a whooping crane. Best catch on the South Branch River this season has been an 1 Pi-pound channel catfish. The biggest smallmouth to (late have been in the 4'* to 5-pound class, said DNR fish biologist Gerry Lewis. Trout Pond and Rock Cliff Lakes in the George Washington National Forest near Wardensville are closed to vehicular travel while the roads in the camping area are. being blacktopped, and probably won't be opened until at least mid-August. Another fly-fishing-only trout stream is being considered for the Eastern Panhandle. It's Rocky Marsh Run, an excellent, spring-fed stream near Shepherdstown. The Trout Unlimited chapter at Martinsburg and the DNR are w o r k i n g on the designation. Float fishermen have reported catching many small bass once again on the Greenbrier, which ranks with the South Branch as the best float streasns in the state. The most encouraging fishing news of the season is the continuing comeback of the Monongahela River between Fairmont and Morgantown (once written off because of acid mine drainage). Good bass fishing is being experienced in the Monongahela again. Some exceptional smallmouth bass fishing has occurred this year in the Little- Kanawha River above Elizabeth, on Middle Island Creek and in the North and South Forks of Hughes River, according to DNR fish biologist Bernie Dowler. Ravenswood area fishermen should try Turkey Run. a 20-acre state impoundment that is largely supplied with fish from the Ohio River during flooding. Five to six- pound bass have been caught there, and muskies have thrived after being stocked several years ago. A 1974 stocking of northern pike also appears to be deemed a success. There have been several state record fish caught .this year, including record golden trout, bowfin and gar. There was a report recently that a record 54-inch mu- skie had been caught, but it turned out to be a hoax. exciting Cincinnati reds national league baseball Plan a trip to Cincinnati.
