2A -- August 3,1975 Sunday Gazette-Mail C-,o-,*vV. A*v . .'j.r\* Otherwise... Tom Fesperman Crime, Criminals Are Reconsidered I'm opposed to crime, by jnd large. 1 think it leads to lawlessness. Lawlessness in turn leads to a breakdown of societies, though this isn t necessarily all bad. because! know some societies that could stand a little breaking down. In any event. As a general thing. 1 think we've got more crime than we can say grace over, yet 1 can't help wondering how it would be if we eliminated it. stock and barrel. THERE WOULD be no Rockford. Columbo or Kojack. Cap'n Kanga- would show up in prime tune The Godfather films would be rubbed out. Nobody would need to be shot in the gooxle by John Wayne. Goodbye. Agatha: hello again. Faith Baldwin. We wouldn't have a lot to talk about, would we'.' We have one town that can serve as a no-crime sample. It s Kelso. Ulit.. recently discovered by some reporter who strayed off the beaten highway. Kelso is a Union Pacific Railroad town. It's in the middle of the Mojave Desert, an area without hideouts. There's a little road through Kelso. but it's nothing to brag about. Everybody works for the railroad, except the school marm. Mrs. Dorothy Cady. About 100 citizens, give or take, live in Kelso. There's a hotel, of a sort, the little school. and a cemetery. But no stores or gas stations. And there's not a lick of crime in town. None. Whatsoever. *· THERE'S NOT even any movie crime, because there's no theater, no TV crime, because they haven't made the TV station yet that can fling a picture clear to Kelso. So, if you want a place that's crime-free, go to Kelso. I just can't imagine how it'd be. closing down the crime industry entirely, shutting up the jugs and all. It might be better to reconsider crime gradually. Like this man in San Antonio who walked in. struck up a bank teller, got a wad. then walked back up front to the lobby, reconsidered the whole thing and asked a banker to please call the police to come and fetch him. If we did wipe crime from the face of the earth, then we'd start worrying about the moon. Fact we're already concerned. There's this case in Tucson. A man named Arnold Morales has been indicted. They got him because they said he was advertising the sale of 1.000-acre parcels of real estate on the moon. But I'm not sure that's a crime. Who's to sav that Arnold Morales doesn't own the moon?
