Let the Whole Town SAN RAFAEL. Calif. lAP) - Aug. 21, 1971. One prison official called it "the blackest, bloodiest day in the history of San Quentin Prison." Monday, six young men go on trial here to face charges ot murder and conspiracy stemming from a few moments of violence that left black revolutionary George Jackson and five other men dead that day. Known by their supporters as the San Quentin Six, they are accused of engineering an abortive prison escape attempt and of killing three white prison guards and two white prisoners. Five of the defendants are black. The sixth. 22-year-old Luis Talamantez, says his lineage is Spanish and Indian. Other defendants are Willie Tate. 30; John Larry Spain. 25; Fleeta Drumgo, 30; Hugo Pinell. 30: and David Johnson. 28. During the superior court trial, prosecutors will seek to prove the defendants joined Jackson in planning to escape with a smuggled gun. The defense team, led by Charles Garry, is expected to argue that prison officials set up Jackson! one of the Soledad Brothers accused of beating a white guard to death while he was serving a prison term. The jurors, 11 of whom are white, will hear testimony in a tightly guarded courtroom in the Marin County Civic Center, a sprawling complex that was Frank Lloyd Wright's last work. * * * A WALL OF THICK PLEXIGLASS will separate the four-man, eight-woman jury and the defendants at the center, which was the scene of a August 1970 Shootout in which a judge, two inmates and Jackson's younger brother, Jonathon, were killed. Under the tight security, the defendants will be chained and shackled, which the defense claims will bias the jurors. All of the defendants have spent most of their adult lives in prison. Charges against them now: five counts of murder, conspiracy to commit escape by force of violence, conspiracy to possess a firearm in a prison and conspiracy to kidnap prison officers. Prison officials say the chain of violence began when white radical attorney Stephen Bingham, then 29, entered the prison's east gate at 11:15 a.m. and requested permission to talk with Jackson. At first, it was denied. But Bingham persisted and at 1:25 p.m., he finally met Jackson in the prison's visiting room.. Bingham left the prison at 2:30 p.m. and has been sought as a fugitive ever since. Officials say Bingham smuggled a gun into Jackson, who hid it in an Afro-style wig. Laser Test To Sterilize Water Success COLUMBIA, Md. UP) - A scientist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory here says he has discovered a way to sterilize water with a laser beam. The reported finding by Dr. John G. Parker, a molecular physicist, raises the possibility that residents of communities drawing water from unclean sources may some day be able to drink clean water that has not been chemically treated. Parker acknowledged that his approach is impractical at this time. He said it is too expensive now to convert electrical energy into laser energy. But ways may be found to decrease the cost, he said, and there is a possibility that the sun's radiation could be directly tapped in the purification process. Parker's tests were conducted in association with the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, which made bacteria counts in laser-treated water taken from the Potomac River. There are three steps to the process, Parker said. First, the water is pressurized with oxygen. The laser beam then irradiates the water, after which the pressure is released and the oxygen escapes. The purification is immediate, the physicist said. Nicholas Man Charged in Death In Collision SUMMERSVILLE-Charges of negligent homicide and failure to control a vehicle were brought against a Nicholas County man Saturday, following a Friday night crash that left a Michigan man dead and his 10-year-old daughter critically injured. Charged in the traffic death was James Henry Skaggs, 19, of Summersviile, who remained hospitalized Saturday for treatment of injuries received in the crash. Skaggs is accused of failing to maintain control of his car. when it rounded a corner on W. Va. 39 near Summersviile Friday night and struck a disabled dune buggy occupied by Paul David Holloway, 35, of Garden City. Mich., his 10-year-old daughter, Vickie Lynn, and his 5-year-old niece, Tern Lusk of Summersviile. who was in satisfactory condition Saturday in Summersviile Hospital. Holloway was killed in the collision. His daughter was listed in critical condition Saturday night at General Division, Charleston Area Medical Center.
