That's the way Mickey Furfari, veteran sports editor of the Morgantown Dominion-Post, sees the upcoming season in his annual football forecast for the WVU Alumni News. "But the Mountaineers must win most, if not all, of the close games to turn the fortunes around after last year's deeply disappointing 4-7 season." Furfari writes. He continues to write that West Virginia could easily have been 7-4 had WVU won the close games last fall. The Mountaineers narrowly lost to Miami (Fla.), Tulane and Richmond by a total of eight points. "The situation could be pretty much the same this season in that most games should be closely contested. That's why Bobby Bowden readily admits that 'we've gotta win the close ones to have a good year,' " Furfari continues. Furfari indicates that Bowden isn't concerned about his offensive attack. " 'We should be stronger in every phase except receiving,' " the sicth sixth coach says. Defense seems to be the only major worry for Bowden. " 'We spent a lot of time last spring trying to strengthen the defense,' " Bowden says. " 'We think we have 11 capable men In there who sill get after you. But they haven't really been tested.'" "In the biggest battles, at least, it s going to be a question of whether West Virginia can outlast its opponent because high scoring is anticipated by both sides," the Morgantown scribe adds. "The Mountaineers won't have to wait long to assess their defensive might. Both Temple in the September 13 home opener and California on September 20 at Berkeley possess high-powered offenses." * * * BOWDEN IS confident the kicking game, a factor in last year's narrow losses, will be improved with Bill McKenzie, Rocky Gianola and Emil Ros showing off their talents in spring drills. Punting is the cause of Bowden's chief concern in the kicking department. " 'Punting and place-kicking can make the difference in the close game,' Bowden reasons with Furfari. " 'That's why we must look for help, possibly from one or two incoming freshmen, in the fall.' " "In all, 33 lettermen are returning, including 18 on offense and 15 on defense," Furfari continues. " 'We've got quality as well as quantity,' " Bowden acknowledges. " 'We at least have reached the point where we can look anyone in the eye, especially on the offensive line.' " "No opponent -- not even Penn State -whipped WVU up front last season," Furfari points out. "Dan Keridra and Danny Williams will share the quarterbacking. Both are sophomores who proved last spring that they're capable of moving the team by rushing or passing," Furfari reports. " 'Kendra has a slight edge on the experience he gained last season with the varsity,' " Bowden explains, " 'but I wouldn't hesitate to put Williams in on the next play.' He would like to use both until such time as one proves dominating." Furfari points out West Virginia's outstanding corps of running backs led by Arthur Owens who led the east in rushing last year. Owens will have Dave Riley and Dwayne Woods backing him up at tailback. Ron Lee and Heywood Smith will be battling it out for the fullback slot. Bowden rates WVU's offensive line as one of the best, and Furfari is quick to add prise.
