Southwest Adventure Ellie Phillips ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - There it is, over the horizon just ahead of you -- a world that you always knew was waiting for you. This is America's Southwest. A timeless dimension of land bulging with magnificent scenery, a land that celebrates the arrival of each new day with vivid shapes, sights, and sounds. This compelling land is at your memory-tips via a motorcoach tour appropriately called Southwest Adventure. And an adventure it is. Francisco Vasquez de Coronado's route is the beginning. Intrepid, brave, bold, Coronado was purportedly geared in gleaming coat of mail when he marched up the Rio Grande River from Albuquerque in the 1540's to find the storied Seven Cities of Cibola. Southwest Adventure leaves Coronado's route as it angles through northern New Mexico, through pastoral country and into southwestern Colorado. On the road to Durango, the scenery changes, subtlely, with cloud shadows hovering over mountainsides, making patterns like huge, protective birds. Durango itself is a fun little town, full of the vim and vinegar it once boasted of during its time of mining glory in the 1880's. Here, the turn- o f - t h e - c e n t u r y l a n d m a r k s have been preserved: Victorian hotels like the General Palmer House and the Grande Palace, convivial bars w i t h s u c h n a m e s a s D i a m o n d Belle's and the Solid Muldoon, and the greatest attraction of them all, the Durango to Silverton narrow gauge train. W.VA. The ride on the "Silverton" is a trip into the past, as the little train chugs 45 miles through breathtaking Las Animas Canyon and the San Juan National Forest, a wilderness route of towering peaks, steep canyons and rushing streams. Its destination, Silverton, Colorado, was a boisterous silver and saloon town in the 1870's. Mining operations are still in evidence around the town, but the raucous air is gone and today the o r i g i n a l b u i l d i n g s house quaint shops and restaurants. On to Mesa Verde National Park, where centuries ago the h u m a n dreams of an ancient people drifted into dust. These ancient ones, or "Anasazi." picked Mesa Verde (green mesa) for their home about 1.300 years ago, living first in pith- o u s e s . . d w e l l i n g s d u g ' i n t o t h e ·June 13. 197f.
