Rickles wins spot with NBC By Jay Fredericks Who says failure doesn't pay? In spite of the fact that he has flopped badly with shows on both ABC and CBS, NBC now has undertaken an expensive d e v e l o p m e n t program to make Don Rickles a television star. NBC is convinced -- despite all evidence to the countrary -- t h a t Rickles can be as popular as "The Waltons" and just needs the right vehicle to showcase his talent. These flirtings with flops are not entirely unknown out there in the cloud cuckoo land of television programming. How many shows did how many networks try Jerry Lewis out on before.'final- Iy, it sank in that the American television audience just d i d n ' t want Jerry Lewis? Doris Day was foisted off on the public for a number of seasons with a constantly changing cast of second bananas and backgrounds before CBS gave up attempting to make her a household word. James Franciscus, who hasn't had a hit show since his long ago second lead in the "Naked City" series, comes along almost every season in a new show which expires quietly when the 13 weeks contract period is up. Tim Conway, while w i l d l y popular as a guest on the Carol Burnett and Flip Wilson shows, is unable to carry a program on his own, but the networks keep trying. Paul Lynde, another fine comic who can add immeasurably as a guest to any comedy show, has yet to find his proper niche as a star but ABC hasn't given up hope. He's very funny for a s h o r t p e r i o d b u t a f t e r a while, insult comedy becomes wearing. And for him to do anything else, they'll have to change Rickle's entire image which means he'd have to give up lucrative night club and personal appearance work. »· Oh how have the mightyly fallen department: A r t h u r O'Connell. who won an Oscar several years back as best supporting actor, is now seen regularly on television hawking for toothpaste. And Margaret Hamilton, probably best remembered as the Wicked Witch who terrified Judy Garland in the " W i z a r d of Oz," seems to confine her talents to spieling for a brand of coffee. They're probably unhappy except on payday. Let me strew it on the record that the worst -- absolutely the most infuriating -radio commerical now extant is the "Mr. Know It All" ad for the Ford Motor Co. Every time I hear them I yearn to grasp Mr. Know It All's neck -- as well as that of the smarty pants car dealer who calls him -- between my h a n d s and ask. as I squeeze and their eyes bulge o u t : "Do you k n o w how many pounds of pressure it takes to strangle a couple of idiots?"
