Not a Horatio Alger By Henrietta Leith N E W YORK-4H-Former head of the Peace Corps and the antipoverty war, highly successful ambassador to France and an effective campaigner for his later brother-in-law John F. Kennedy, R. Sargent Shriver Jr., has been mentioned often for elective office but never made the race before. At one point in his career, when it was rumored that President Johnson might choose that Joe's papers weren't suitable for publication, and, far from being offended, Kennedy asked the young editor to go to work for him. Shriver was sent to Chicago to try to rent out spaces in the Kennedy - owned Merchandise Mart, then the world's largest private office building and half- empty at the time. In 1953 they were married at St. Patrick's Cathedral by the late Francis Cardinal Spellman and Eunice went back to Chicago, where she plunged into the round of social and civic activities that had already become a habit with Shriver. They liave five children, Robert III, 18; Maria, 16; Timothy, 12; Mark, 8, and Anthony, 7. Shriver's behind-the-scenes role in John Kennedy's 1960 campaign for the presidency, described by the late Robert Kennedy as vital in the Kennedy victory, stemmed from Shriver's long-standing ties to the Chicago black community. He set up a civil rights division in the campaign and persuaded Kennedy to call Mrs. Martin Luther King Jr., while her husband was in a Southern jail. The two actions were believed to have given Kennedy his slim margins in some in- [ANNOUNCEMENTS!
