It still seems like a silly idea -- a project for a person who can eat one peanut or one potato chip or close a mystery novel in the middle of the final chapter. But h a d n ' t everyone always said. Vegas is the best deal in the world if you don't gamble? Meaning that the food, drinks and entertainment are priced at rock bottom, the idea being to get you to the gambling tables. THOMAS REALTY CO. Never being much of a gambler, when the opportunity to go arose I bet on it. My wife was going there on business and I decided to tag along, catch some of the sunshine, do some reading and people watching, put in some time at the pool, see some shows and take advantage of the good restaurant prices. Frankly. Vegas has never been at the top of my list of places I wanted to visit, but the more I found out about it the more it appealed to me. A little investigation turned up the news that Petula Clark. Tim Conway, Englebert H u m p e r d i n c k , Tony Bennett. Tony Martin and Cyd C h a r i s s e . and Lou Rawls were scheduled to be in town when we would be there. There are always the French reviews at several of the hotels, namely the Lido de Paris and the Folies Bergere. I believe I mentioned the food. I read some literature about the place and consulted the maps (it's really not near anything unless you call 290 miles near, then it's near Los Angeles). Hoover Dam and Lake Meade are a short trip away and there is some appeal to the desert after a bleak mid-Atlantic winter. Then it occurred to me to consult my friend Pete, who likes to go there a lot, and my friend Zang who does go there a lot. Both like to gamble, naturally, so I d i d n ' t have the heart to tell them what I had in mind: no gambling, not even the penny slots. Pete kept forgetting to bring in the literature he had on Vegas and most of Zang's advice turned on the statement: play Black Jack and stay away from the girls at the bar. The former he tried to explain in an intricate way that supposedly proves your odds are best at the Black Jack tables. The latter needed no further explanation. With this sound advice ringing in my ears, I set forth to meet my wife in fabulous Vegas. Always one to pinch pennies, I was mindful that she was on expense account, meaning I would pay only the difference between single and double occupancy at the hotel ($2 a night in this case) and that I would get an airline discount traveling as a spouse. Five fun-filled days in Las Vegas: at the airport people started playing slot machines without putting down their bags. First of all, I was surprised at Las Vegas, as I am with most places I visit for OCEAN FRONT '1 THE HEART OF MYRTLE BEACH'.' You can swim, eat, drink, people watch and catch the sunshine, and there are always Hoover Dam and Lake Meade. Our first night we went to the 27th floor of the Landmark Hotel ("above all else in Las Vegas" the ads say) for the best Chinese dinner I ever experienced -- another of those surprises. We even tried and were impressed with the Chinese wine, a white grape wine called Wang Fu. Total bill: under $10. Friends were proving to be right. The next day was spent investigating the city and lounging at the pool. Vegas doesn't operate on day and night cycles like most ordinary cities because it is anything but ordinary. It is even difficult to find a clock. Everything goes at a 24-hour pace. We never got used to seeing people gambling at 8 a.m., and drinking. This, after we had been up and had breakfast. The weekends included brunch at several of the big hotels, ranging in price from $1.95 to $2.50. We tried a similar deal at The Dunes the next day for $2.25 also outstanding. Saturday night we saw Petula Clark and Tim Conway at Caesar's Palace at the d i n n e r show, the most expensive evening out for us at about $45, including drinks and tip. We were constantly bombarded with lures to the gaming table or the slot machines. It is difficult to get to anything in the city without going through the casinos. Shills on the street offer coupons for free plays on slot machines and some hotels give guests silver dollars to gamble with. Back to our story. Sunday included a trip via rented car to Hoover Dam, one of the country's man-made wonders. We were even impressed at the Casinos when the loudspeaker called "telephone for Mr. Dean Martin" or "call f o r M r . P a r n e l l i Jones." I believed they weren't just doing it for effect. And I also believed the sto- r i e s a b o u t t h e g u y w h o picked up $30,000 at the tables last night (always "last night"). And I believed the stories about the wiped out gamblers begging breakfast money at the airport, only to put it in the slot machines. I didn't really see any, but I believed it. Who was I to question? I hadn't believed my friends when they said Vegas was a good deal if you don't gamble, it is. And they still don't believe me when I say I didn't. Zang, I didn't play Black Jack, but I did stay away from the girls at the bar. Believe me. Myrtle Beach. Phone «03--272-611: The Newest O/dfimer The Breakers is an old favorite in Myrtle Beach.
