.^ about food aboard a Caribbean cruise ship. In addition to the three main meals, there's an earlybird breakfast, snacks throughout the day. and a gourmet spread at "the midnight buffet. »· There was a time when cruising was just for the idle rich. Not so today. I said cruising is the best vacation bargain available -- and it is. For $50-75 per day per person you buy the whole package. That includes transportation, accommodations, all meals, and all the activities and entertainment the cruise ship offers. The difference in cost is only for your type of stateroom. They range from a suite to an inside cabin on the lower deck with .four in a stateroom. Other than your stateroom, it's a-cine-class cruise ship. ·;" .rj,-- As a suggestion, you might consider an outside cabin in the middle of the ship. The overall atmosphere is that of a vacation resort. Everything is relaxed and casual. You do dress for dinner, but some evenings are casual dress, some are party- time, and some are the cap- Directly on Waterfront THE TIDES All Varieties Fishing Near 1362 West Ocean View Avenue NORFOLK, VA. 23503 Phone 804/588-0443 Motel Apts 4 Persons $110.00 Weekly; Rooms 1 Double :Bed, Double $14.00 Air Conditioned, Swimming Pool, Private Beach tain's evenings. »· Meeting people is effortless. Just say "Hi," and you're into a friendly conversation. Aboard ship it seems all the barriers disappear. Everyone is delighted to be here, and there's no stuffiness or put ons. The great equalizer is the swimming pool. When everyone is r u n n i n g a r o u n d i n swim suits, there's not a bit of difference between anyone. There is plenty to keep passengers occupied. During a day at sea there are more activities than anyone could handle. Although the activities slow down when the ship is in port, there is still something happening for those who d o n ' t choose to go ashore and visit one of the ports of call. Every evening there are entertainment, movies, and dancing till the wee hours for the late-night set. In the dining room you can have seconds, thirds, and fourths. If you don't like a particular meal you've ordered, it will immediately be replaced with another dish of your choosing. For those who don't take to sun bathing, there are first-rate movies, informative lectures on the upcoming ports of c a l l , deck games, skeet shooting off the bow. card games, a lending library with best sellers, music and cocktails, horse racing (shipboard style), and sack time for those who want to rest up. There are those slot machines too. and even shipboard romances. And if anyone gets tired of what's happening aboard ship, that's about the time another series of ports are in the offing. And by the time one might be tiring of the ports of call every day, it's back to sea again for a long haul to the next Caribbean island. After more than a week on a cruise ship the nautical language becomes commonplace. Through the daily information sheets passed out to all the passengers there's also an acquaintance with many of the key people aboard ship. So at this p o i n t in the cruise, there's a friendly familiarity not only among the passengers, but also with the men and women running the ship and the activities. And the cabin stewards, the waiters, and the bus boys are relaxed and casual by now, too. In fact, if you're a good listener, they'll probably pour out their dreams, their hopes, and even their disappointments. But there is a point beyond which the chumminess does not extend. Regardless of the passing air of intimacy, everyone who works aboard a cruise ship-is happily or painfully aware that the · cruise always ends, and the whole process begins anew with another load of passengers. For anyone considering a Caribbean cruise, there are a number of things to keep in mind. The longer the cruise, the less expensive it's going to be on a per day basis. If you're t h i n k i n g a b o u t a week-long cruise, it- just might pay you to look closer at a two-weeker if you have the time available. Everyone has his likes and dislikes. Making arrangements for your cruise shouldn't be an impulse thing. Shop around, get as much i n f o r m a t i o n as is available, and make sure the people you listen to are authorities on cruising. One item too many passengers forget is a sweater. Sound unlikely? With the ship breezing along at 20 knots, it definitely gets breezy on deck--and in the evenings a little chilly, too. But the major reason is that your cabir and all the public rooms are fully air conditioned. So if you've been toasting in 85 degree sunshine, the 68 degree indoor temperature can be a little frosting. For all your preparations for a cruise, however, you'll still find it all a heady experience. There's nothing quite like the sea. ********************* HAVEN INN MOTEL and RESTAURANT 3812 E.
