rH--Aug. 6,1972 Week's Colonial Has Individual Characteristics By Andy Lang The Associated Prest T h r o u g h o u t the years, almost endless variations of the two-story Colonial have been offered to meet family needs and changing tastes. This house sticks pretty much to authentic styling, with emphasis on retention of the exterior charm typical of the history-based design, but it offers some interesting distinctive touches A horizontal appearance is given to the entire structure by extension of the garage roof line over the entrance door and the boxed bay windows of the living and dining rooms. There is brick on either side of the entrance door to contrast with the light-colored hand-split wood shingles and shutters. « * * THE LIVING, dining and family rooms radiate around the large central foyer with no cross traffic* necessary. To the rear of the living room and the right of the foyer is the wood-paneled family room with its brick- faced Colonial fireplace and the double sliding glass doors that lead to today's all-impor- tantoutdoor living area. The combined kitchen-dinette area is a model of convenience with eating accomo- dations for company or the entire family and a full complement of appliances, storage cabinets, countertop, etc. surroundings an "island" range. Two windows over the sink ed next to the main bath. Architect William Chirgotis' plans call for a full basement which can be developed to the owner's taste for recreational, and the box window bay in storage or other purposes. l***' m * m »+mmmmmm*m»mmmmmmmmmmmf*wm-*mmim*mmmmmmmmmmmm**m» | STVDY PLAN COUPON i You ctn get a study plan for Tbe House of the Week by ! sending this coupon and SO cents to House Plans, Sunday ! Dial 348-4848 Household Answers Q.--I bought some welded- wire fabric for use in reinforcing concrete in a project I have coming up soon. The roll is marked 6 x 6, 10 10. What does that mean? A.--It means the wires are 6 inches apart and are 10 gauge: Q.--I recently bought some shellac and used it right from the container. It didn't dry properly. What caused this? A.-It could be that the shellac was too old. But a more likely cause is that it was applied 1 on a very humid day. Did you dilute the shellac with d e n a t u r e d alcohol? This makes it easier to apply and helps it to dry more quickly. * · * Q.--Several weeks ago I used some latex redwood 1 stain, but didn't have time to finish the job. When I resumed, I found bubbles forming on the surface of the wood. Why did 1 this happen the second time and not the first? A.--I can only guess at the answer. If, after you finished the job the first time, you washed the brush in soap and water, as is often recommended on the can of stain, you may have failed to wash out all of the soap. In reusing the stain, the soap was reactivated. Q.--The shutoff value under our kitchen sink leaks a little. We have been keeping a pan under it to catch the water. The leak is at the handle and so tiny that it fills the pan only half way ever 24 hours, but I would like to be able to fix it without calling a plumber. Can you help me? A.--Most of the time you can halt the leak merely by tightening the nut behind the handle. Turn it just a bit and see what happens. If the' leak persists after 5 minutes, turn the nut just a bit more. Remember that it must be turned clockwise. If these two efforts produce no results, turn off the water, remove the nut and wind some plumber's cord around the stem and replace the nut. You can get the cord at a hardware store. Tell the dealer what you want it for, as there are several different kinds. Q.--Our attic fan has been running well for two years, but lately has started to vibrate and make a noise. How can I halt this? A .--G e n e r a 11 y, this is caused 1 by something having come loose in the mounting. You'll just have to examine the installation and see what is not firmly in place. If you can't determine what is loose, you have no choice but to call a repairman. (For either of Aruly Lang's booklets, " M a k e Simple Plumbing Repairs" or "Wood Fin.insh.in0 in the Home."
