New Solar Storm Due By Monday BOULDER, Colo.--un -- Astronomers predict that a new solar storm will be spawned on the surface of the sun before late Monday. They say it will be similar to a disturbance Friday that tickled power systems and disrupted radio and telephone communications a r o u n d the world Saturday. The storm's influence on earth will be detected by slight changes in satellite orbits, disrupted short wave and telephone communications and power fluctuations over high voltage transmission lines, a spokesman for the National Oceanic Atmos-' pheric Administration said Saturday. Ralph Segman of NOAA said the agency was forecasting a second flare before late Monday, witr a 95 per cent chance for a flare of medium size and intensity and a 35 per cent chance for a large flare. The storm also should create brilliant displays of aurora bo- j f realis, or northern lights, possibly as far south as Florida, Segman said. A spokesman at the North American Air Defense Command's headquarters near Colorado Springs, where all satellites are tracked through their orbits, said the storm had had no significant impact on any satellite. The solar winds, he said, would have little if a n y ] ? immediate impact on a satellite.; '.- f Segman said a solar flare onK the surface of the sun Friday!* sent a wave of electrified gas to] 5 the earth's vicinity at 11 a.m. £ Saturday. The shock wave cons- £ ists of plasma, or electrified | gas. I Friday's flare, covering about one billion square miles on the sun's surface, gave bWh to a geomagnetic storm, one of the § five largest storms observed by;; NOAA in its 30-year history.
