»«/, i y i u Jimmy Who? (Continued from Page IE) In 1938, when Jimrny Carter was 13. their black neighbors asked if they could l i s t e n t o t h e second J o e L o u i s - M a x Schmeling fight on the Carters' radio. The radio was propped up in an open window and the family and their visitors listened under a mulberry tree. Louis knocked out Schmeling in the first round on the road to becoming the first black heavyweight champion in years. James Earl Carter Sr.. was "deeply disappointed." his son says. Nobody made a sound except to say, "Thank you, Mister Earl.'' Then the visiting blacks walked across the dirt road, crossed a railroad track, quietly entered a house and then exploded in noisy celebration. "If you become president what kind of man would you appoint to the Supreme Court?" a newswoman asked. "Why do you say 'man'"? And then candidate Carter went on to say that as governor of Georgia he appointed judges who were "aggressively concerned with the institution of justice and civil and human rights." Another Earl Warren? Miss Lillian: "Everybody around here knows I'm an integrationist. J i m m y ' s father wasn't. I try to be tolerant of everyone, even people from Alabama. "Jimmy and 1 tried to integrate our own church and got nowhere. It'll never happen in my lifetime." Jimmy Carter, trying to persuade a friend not to break up his marriage, ended his long argument with this fervent plea: "Jerry, t h i n k of your C h r i s t i a n precepts." -'.'But, Jimmy, I have no Christian precepts." .;'4Vhal 1 mean is your Judeo-Christian precepts," he told his Jewish friend. ·Jimmy Carter, in his basic speech on the stump: ;'-'My daughter is in third grade back home, with 25 blacks and 10 whites, and she's doing just fine." Jimmy Carter quoting Reinhold Niebuhr: "The sad duty of politics is to establish justice in a sinful world." TV interview: "What drives you?" Long pause. · "I don't know exactly how to express i t . . . It's not an unpleasant sense of being driven. I feel like I have one life to live. 1 feel that God wants me to do the best 1 can with it. And that's quite often my major prayer . . . "The fact that a person has deep religious convictions doesn't mean that he always thinks that he's right, that God's ordained him to take a dominant position. Although I have prayed a good bit, and do, I've never asked God to let me be president." -Charleston.
