10A-- Aug. 6, 1972 Sunday Guett+Mail Om-lMttn, W«t Vlfi - ' Lin Plane Turned Back Before Crash By Dev Murarka © The London Observer MOSCOW-- The plane carrying Lin Piao, his family and comrades, was heading back towarc China when it crashed in Mongolia last September, killing all on board. That new information about theircumstances in which Lin, ^.v.y.'-v.v.v.v. 4 ' - ' - ' .. unmistakably I 1 COMING SOON one-time heir-apparent to Communist party Chairman Mao Tse-tung, died disposes of the theory that Peking gave last- minute instructions for tht destruction of the party. Mao himself has denied this, and in any case the plane was over Mongolian territory at the time of the crash. The theory being put forward here is that at the last minute someone in the plane decided to return to China and changed his mind about seeking refuge in Mongolia or the Soviet Union. This was opposed by others, and in the ensuing struggle, which was fought with guns, the pilot lost control of the plane and it crashed. It will never be known for certain whether it was the ilots who decided to fly back lome at the last moment or someone in Lin's high-ranking entourage. The remains of the plane and LIN PIAO Killed In Crash the bodies have been brought to the Soviet Union for thorough investigation. The findings are unlikely to be revealed for a long time to come, if ever. There are signs that the Rus sians were in some way in volved with Lin and that Mos cow was deeply disappointed with his failure to gain power in Peking and his death. Some Soviet specialists on China main tained privately, even at tto height of the Cultural Revolu tion, that Lin would turn out I be Moscow's best bet. The view is gaining groun here that a struggle for powe is on in Peking between Pranie Chou En-lai and Chiang Chin Mao's wife. It is suggested tha Mao may not have enougL tim left to engineer Chou'* downfal Once Mao is gone, Chiang wi just fade out, because she can not survive without her hus bands support. The Soviet view is that insta bility at the top in China wi continue for a long while yet. i BALL BALL CANNING JARS BALL ONE DOZEN REGULAR QUART JARS SUNDAY ONLY! f«tf THEME BOOKS SClKOt [stationery] site! 5 HOLE BOOK.
