'Panther' return most welcome By W.E. Ckttlot, m "THE RETURN OF THE PINK PANTHER," Peter Selkrt, Catherine Sdkell, Cteema East *~ Inspector Clouseau, who couldn't track a trail of elephant spoor along a deserted Texas interstate, is b$pk, and he'll be in Charleston for ah extended engagement, if the opening night's audience--up against Elvis Presley's opening night, incidentally-- is any indicator. Peter Sellers was outrageously funny in the first film about the French Surete's most formidable numbskull, and he still is creating chaos, confounding allies, and abetting enemies wherever he shows up--a perpetual shedder of disaster, who, as his immediate superior says, "makes Attila the Hun look like a Red Cross aide." In Gstaad, Clouseau shows his Paris police credentials to a cab driver and, preparatory to opening the back door, imperiously orders him to follow that car, whereupon the cab driver rushes out of the ' front seat and starts running down the roadway after the car he was commanded to pursue. -Moments later we see a sweaty Clouseau, valpac slung across his shoulder, trudging toward the Palace Hotel. Arriving there, the doorman kindly asks him if he can take his bag. "No one ever touches this bag except me," Clouseau archly responds, He enters a revolving door and somehow manages to lose the valpac, which finally is rescued and returned to him inside the hotel by the same doorman. Then, a man in a business suit approaches Clouseau and says: "Coat, please." Clouseau takes off and hands him his coat. "Hat, please." Clouseau gives him his hat. Gloves, please." The gloves are surrendered. "Grazie," murmurs the stranger as he heads for and goes through the revolving door. "Prego," replies Clouseau who turns to stand in front of a foyer window and watch the thief walk toward a roadster, put on coat, hat, loves just prior to scrambling into ihe driver's seat, wave--at which point Clouseau partially lifts his hand-and drive away. This is a funny movie. The humor is sufficiently varied to appeal to every kind of sense of humor. Two Kung Fu sequences keep children squealing and those of us who've . had a belly full of Oriental mayhem holding their bellies. There is a plot--not a bad one, come to think of it--yet it's hardly vital for Seller's studied indocies. Although the film is his, the rest of the cast is superb. The movie is rated good for the whole family. It is. I was accompanied by two first graders. They laughed often: Moreover, if there's a single obscenity I missed it. No nudity either. une complaint. Next door is "Earthquake" in sensurround, whatever the devil that may be. And whatever it is, the night I was adjacent to it, sensurround was loud enough to disturb our audience for an unduly protracted period on two separate occasions. The theater shook slightly, and the low constant rumble that threatened never to cease was unpleasant and unfun- _ ny. However, even sensurround couldn't upset Sellers--but it wasn't for lack of trying.
