Sunday Gazette-Mail, Sunday June 2,1974 COnCRHTULRTIOnS TEN OUTSTANDING CARRIERS AWARDED SCHOLARSHIPS Kids have a way of growing up. Take your newspaper carrier... only yesterday, it seems, he was putting your daily paper behind your front door. Today he has completed high school and is a young man, ready for college! While delivering a newspaper is an education in itself, Charleston Newspapers are proud of their carriers and want to do all possible to aid these future leaders. To this end, 10 carrier salesmen have been selected to receive $500 Charleston Newspapers scholarships to the college or university of their choice. In the past seven years, Charleston Newspapers have awarded $35,000, in scholarships to carriers. Not all carriers receive scholarships. However, many of them receive other awards such as trips, incentive prizes and bonuses. All earn a substantial profit, in one form or another, from their routes. Most important is the experience they gain from dealing with people, keeping financial records and handling money. Charleston Newspapers take pride in these 10 carriers and the more than 1,400 others upon whom we depend to market our products. We are happy that we can offer them an opportunity for a better life through their association with us and you, our readers and advertisers. Charleston Newspapers carriers not only make the grade ... they're in a class of their own.
