Spontaneity is what Flip Wilson and Emery Award winning producer Lee Mendelson were after, as they utilized the entertainment cinema verite format for "Travels With Flip," an upcoming special for CBS. And spontaneity is what they got, sometimes more than they bargained for. Witness Flip's experiences when he took over a San Francisco cable car on its commuter run from Beach Street to Union Square. Flip, in a conductor's uniform, was setting the price. A dollar for the usual 30$ ride. "It went up this morning, it's a dollar," Flip told one very angry woman. "It was in the morning's paper . . . the company cannot assume responsibility for your not reading this morning's paper." All in good fun, Flip announced that he was pocketing the extra money because, "we been trying to get a raise and nobody supported our union. So me and the guys are doing a little rip-off on the side... 'cause one of the guys wife's just had a baby." When one passanger announced she too had just had a baby, Flip immediately returned her dollar. One woman, Dorothy Schadister from Lakewood, Ohio, was having none of it. Everytime Flip tried to ask her for her fare, all she's say was "Leave me alone. You're bothering me, get away, this is ridiculous." Finally she announced that she was appalled by the fare increase and didn't think it was the least bit funny. Flip tried to soothe her nerves by asking polite questions, but Dorothy wouldn't let it go. Declaring she had been traveling for a week and now San Francisco was nothing like the tourist books promised, she de- "I would never come here we travel twice a year tided again , and I'm gonna tell everybody at home never to come to San Francisco." SB * This was too much for Flip, who finally took off his cap and said flat out "Can I say one more thing to you ... mam . . . mam... can I tell ya that I'm only Flip Wilson and I'm bavin' some fun wit 'cha on the cable car ..." At which point it was Flips turn to be surprised. "I know," said Dorothy excitedly, "don'cha think I'm a good actress?" GAS LAMPS AND GRILLS FINEST DESIGNS .
