A- 22,133. 93 to Vie In Open Sectional CHARLOTTE (AP) - Ninety-three golfers will compete for 45 U.S. Open Tournament places Monday in sectional qualifying at the Charlotte Country Club. It is the largest field of the 13'that will compete in locations around the country Monday or Tuesday to make the field of 150 for the Open, scheduled June 13-16 at the Winged Foot Golf Club, Mamaroneck, N. Y. The Charlotte field includes many players competing currently in the Kemper Open PGA tour event. Gene Littler and Ken Venturi, former Open champs; Lionel Hebert, Bob Rosburg, Bobby Nichols and Dave Marr, former PGA winners; and former Masters champions Gay Brewer, George Archer and Charles Coody are in the Charlotte field. Also entered are tour players Bruce Devlin, Leonard Thompson, Dan Sikes, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Ben Crenshaw, J. C. Snead, John Mahaffey, Miller Barber, Rod Curl, Lee Elder and Bobby Mitchell. Walker Cup team players of last year Vmny Giles, Mark Pfeil and Marty West head the six-man amateur contingent. Carew Given May Award BOSTON ( A P ) -- Second baseman Rod Carew of the Minnesota Twins, given a good shot at becoming the first player to bat .400 since Ted Williams in 1941, Saturday was named winner of the American League's Star Parade of the Month Award for May. Carew collected 37 hits in 86 times at bat for a .430 average during the month. It raised his season average to .411. Minor Registration Set at Western L.L. Registration for the Charleston Western minor league will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Legion Field in North Charleston. Each boy who is registering for the first time must have his birth certificate and be accompanied by at least one parent or guardian.
