Albans has received a grant from Federal R u r a l Development Act funds to increase its ability to combat forest fires. Kanawha County forest ranger Don Hill said Saturday. The grant will be used to better equip the department in fighting forest fires and improve rural fire protection, Hill noted. Funds from the act are administered to volunteer fire departments on a 50-50 matching basis by the forestry division of the Department of Natural Resources. Steve Upton, district forest ranger for the D.N'R. pointed out that this is a pilot program. "Hopefully Congress will make it permanent and adequately fund it to continue this support." Utpon added. Presentation of the grant was made to George Erskine. Lakewood chief. The fire department has been in existence for three years. Hill and Upton said that 1,200 fires were reported in the DNR's nine-county Dis- trict 5 this spring, making it the worst fire season since 1950. More than 200 of .these fires were in Kanawha County, they added. West Virginia received a total of 536.000 in Rural Development Act funds. A total of 149 volunteer fire departments applied for funds, but only 51 could be funded. The largest grant, 51,500 went to Spruce River Volunteer Fire Department in Boone County.
