Foy The Paul Masson Chess Tournament now in progress at the Paul Masson Mountain winery. Saratoga. Cal.. is not billed as a bicentennial event but there is some connection with what happened July 4, 1776. ' On display there is an exhibition of chess · sets and boards from the extensive private . collections of David Hafler and John Harbeson of Philadelphia. '. One of the chess sets once belonged to ; Benjamin Franklin. This is an 18th centu- · ry French pearwood set, with Directoire style pieces (the knights do not have horse heads). The board is also 18th century (1730), from New England. Perhaps Franklin used this set in games with Charles Carroll of Carrollton or George Wythe: or other fellow-signers of the Declaration of Indepndence -- such as Thomas Jefferson or John Adams while ! they were working in committee on the text of the Declaration. The sets on exhibition at the Paul Masson toijnament were selected especially on the basis of previous distinguished own- ership, another consideration was the artistry and diversity of design, as well as the national origin. For example, there is a set originally owned by Louis XV of France; another belonged to both Napoleon and General Murat. There is a 1640 Italian set and an 1800 polychromed ivory set carved in Bengal. There is even an 19th century set owned by the Marchioness of Tweedale (whoever she was). * * * THE CONTINENTAL Chess Association's World Open Chess Tournament in New York, was won by Paul Benko and Alan Trefler. each 8-1. Local chess activity, such as there is. may pick up before the Kanawha Valley Open Aug. 16-17. However, the Elk River Chess Club championship tourney continues with weekly sessions. There were three games played in the fourth round last week: Ed Andrews and Jim Fields drew. Tim Davis won from Tom RolRrt- son, and Charles Szasz scored over Cnrtin Drucker.
