J une 2. 1974 Sundav Gazette-Mail ~ Chanson. West Virginia Smoke Hole Ancient Picturesque Srnoke Hole Cavern, discovered centuries ago. received its name from the Seneca Indians because it was used by them as a place for smoking meat. Later the Tavern was used by soldiers d u r i n g the dark days of the Civil War as a place for storing ammunition, and the story goes that millions of dollars in gold were hidden in its secret w a l l s . Away from the beaten paths and nestled safely in a little valley among towering mountains of stone, it formed a perfect place for hidden treasures. A f t e r the w a r , this valley and the h i l l s s u r r o u n d i n g it were settled by a group of brave people who depended entirely upon the work of their own hands, from b u i l d i n g their homes and raising flax for weaving their clothing to the distilling of their own corn whiskey. Srnoke Hole Cavern, because it afforded cover, a nice stream of clear cold water, and plenty of storage space, was chosen as a spot for making the corn whiskey, and the old s t i l l remains to this day, along with jugs used for storing the finished product, and may be seen when visiting the Cavern. Directly on Routes 4 and 28, just eight miles west of Petersburg, this lovely Cavern, has been open to the p u b l i c only a few short years, it offers outstanding underground beauty and a collection of rare formations perfected through the ages. Among them are the longest ribbon stalactite in the world; second highest room of any known cavern: limestone coral, a rare formation, found only in one other cavern in the world; rainbow falls; Alaskan Glacier, and many other unusual formations.
