15C--June 2,1974 ;__l.__r__i_~__ "* _ Sunday {,atte-Mail Farm Vacation Key to Relaxed, Rural Fun By Keith Walters Remember Grandma and wood-burning stoves and hot biscuits and mincemeat pie? Remember Grandpa and the rides on his plow-horses and the land he used to clear and plow and fragrance from his pipe? Remember the house? Big and airy and white, (rigid in winter and blissfully cool in s u m m e r , and enormous porches with thick, wood railings? The young'probably don't remember. The older do. It's a little bit of faded America, a part which has made a comeback of sorts in West Virginia through vacations on farms. · Down in Williamsburg, a little community accessible only by a one-lane road that serves two cars with the aid of mud berms, there's Mountain View Farm which, offers farm vacations for the older and younger generations. It's typical of a dozen or so f a r m s where the old and young can enjoy the taste of farm life -- clean air, fresh food, nature, and animals. Unlike some of the other farm vacation areas, the 100-acre farm in Greenbrier County doesn't have cows, chickens and hogs, but it does have horses -- not the plowing kind Grandpa used to put you atop but horses which offer a smoother, faster ride. Mrs. James W. Hallman, owner of M o u n t a n View Farm, has 20 of them for her guests. "We're not a w o r k i n g farm," she points out, "but we do have facilities which help our guests recapture some of the memories they have of farm life. "Oh, we'll let them work if they want, but about all they can do here is go into the meadows and cut hay. Our guests do that and think it's fun, but real farmers think it's work." "However, if a person wants to vacation here and dabble a little bit on a farm, there are plenty of farms around here. My place is right in ' the middle of a big farming area." ·' Mrs. Hallman is the first to remind you of the farming life. »· Grandma and Grandpa used to have pet expressions probably thought of as a little corny today. So does Mrs. Hallman, but the sayings don't sound^corny. "We've never put up any big neon signs to advertise our place, because we don't want farm and offers hiking, bass and trout fishing and deer, squirrel and turkey hunting. Discussing children and the fact there's not a "Do Not Touch" sign on her property, she quipped, "The way some of these people act when their children touch something, you'd think they were whipping the devil around the stump!" In addition to horseback riding, her farm offers bass fishing in a lake ("Just recently someone pulled a 19-inch bass out of there") and trout fishing in Flynn's Creek; hiking and r i d i n g trails on Cold Knob; swimming in a modern pool or skinny-dipping for the brave in the creek; lessons in riding and swimming; cottages a c c o m m o d a t i n g as many as six adults; motel rooms; »and f a r m h o u s e rooms; a campground for trailers, and delicious food. Mrs. Hallman has become recognized state-wide for her sour cream rolls which complement farm-style cooking in farm-style servings. "We've gotten a lot of write- ups in newspapers and magazines about our food, and they always mention the sour cream rolls. They're a favorite," she said. Mountain View Farm is just one of the vacation farms available to West Virginians. Also in Greenbrier County is Spring Valley Farm, located 23 miles east of Hinton on Rt. 3.
