West Virginia's Potomac Highlands are among the most beautiful and historic regions in America. Within their confines lie Spruce Knob, the state's highest point, and Harpers Ferry, the lowest. The Highlands are made up of eleven counties on the eastern border of the state that have contributed significantly to the historic legacy of the nation. Five counties have 18th century origins: Hampshire. 1754; Berkeley, 1772: Hardy, 1786, Randolph, 1787, and Pendleton, 1788. Jefferson. Morgan, Pocahontas and Tucker began in the 19th century. Grant and Mineral were created at the close of the Civil Wr. Your Highland tour begins at Elkins, home of the Mountain State Forest Festival, Davis and Elkins College and the gateway to the Monongahela National Forest. The forest's Stuart Recreation Area beckons the camper, naturalist, sportsman and family group. DAVIS, the state's highest incorporated town, was once a riproaring logging community. Many of its past remnants are preserved in the Mountain State Museum. Blackwater Falls State Park with its spacious modern lodge and rustic cabins offers a real vacation paradise. In the park is majestic Blackwater Falls and Canyon and nearby is the new Canaan Valley State Park with its outstanding ski facilities. Another unique attraction in the area is the primitive beauty of Dolly Sods, with its strange rock formations and windblown flora. Mineral County boasts familiar Saddle Mountain, behind which a stone marker indicates the site of the cabin where Nancy Hanks, mother of Abraham Lincoln, was born. ROMNEY. Crossing the South Branch of the Potomac River, the visitor enters the State's oldest incorporated town, Romney. The Trough, a rugged stretch of the South Branch River, is regarded as one of the east's top small- mouth bass spots. BERKELEY SPRINGS. From Morgan County four states are seen. Berkeley Springs, called "Bath" when George W a s h i n g t o n summered there, boasts the state's only castle built to woo a beautiful woman. South of the town, Cacapon State Park offers a scenic retreat amid cool forests and mountains, as does a private resort in the area. Sleepy Creek Public Hunting Area provides camping and water sports in its 200-acre lake. MARTINSBURG, gateway to the Shenandoah Valley, is in the middle of West Virginia's lush apple and peach country. "Boydville," the mansion of General Elisha Boyd is located here. Belle Boyd (of another family), the legendary Confederate spy, was born and raised in Martinsburg. SHEPHERDSTOWN. The Shepherdstown visitor will delight in the colonial atmosphere of this quaint college town. Once known as Mecklenburg, it was first settled by Germans perhaps as early as 1719. The exact date is the subject of considerable scholarly debate. HARPERS FERRY, with its narrow streets and old- stone buildings, is being restored to just as it was in John Brown's day. Now a National Historical Park, it attracts over a million visitors annually. To accommodate these visitors the State of West Virginia operates a Tourist Visitors Center in the Park. Harpers Ferry Caverns is another area attraction. CHARLES TOWN. At Charles Town, one can tour the homes of the Washing- tons', the courthouse where John Brown was tried, and two of the State's four thoroughbred racetracks. South of Charles Town is Bunker Hill where Morgan Morgan built the first permanent home in what is now West Virginia. On a side trip to the Lost River State Park region, the visitor sees where Lost River disappears u n d e r ground, then reappears three miles distant as the Cacapon. MOOREFIELD, situated in the South Branch Valley, hosts the annual Poultry Festival and House and Garden Tour. PETERSBURG. Picturesque Petersburg, site of the colorful White Water Weekend each spring, also claims the home of the Golden Centennial Trout. Nearby are Smoke Hole Caverns. To the north of Petersburg, near Mount Storm, lies the new Virginia Electric Power Company (VEPCO) dam. Its 1,200-acre lake offers the tourist boating, water skiing, fishing and swimming. Stony River Reservoir practically joints the VEPCO facility, offering a double treat to water sports enthusiasts. Southward, one can climb to the "top" of West V i r g i n i a at Spruce K n o b w h i c h is 4,860 feet high. Spruce Knob Lake is full of big trout and open for fishing all year. Majestic Seneca Rocks is the focal point for the 100,000-acre Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area. For spelunkers the surrounding countryside boasts hundreds of limestone caves, many yet uncharted, as well as West Virginia's largest commercial caverns -- Seneca. GREEN BANK is the site of the futuristic National Radio A s t r o n o m y O b s e r v a t o r y , where scientists "listen" to outer space. CASS. Further south, the Cass Scenic Railroad provides a ride on an authentic old-time logging train. MARLINTON. Below Marlinton. Watoga State Park offers a complete gamut of outdoor fun. HILLSBORO. At Hillsboro. are the m u s e u m - h o m e of Pearl Buck now being restored and Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park. HUTTONSVILLE. South of Huttonsville is Kumbrabow State Forest -- a perfect place to camp, rent a cabin, fish and hunt. Rich Mountain Battlefield near Beverly still shows traces of Civil War trenches. R e t u r n i n g to E l k i n s a f t e r completing the tour, the traveler is keenly aware of the Potomac Highland's proud heritage.
