Sunday Ca*ette-MaU Charteifbn, VYeit Virginia State Centers Aid Travel There is a growing spate of information centers springing up in West Virginia. All are designed to help the traveler make the most of his vacation time. Many information centers are operated by local Chambers of Commerce. Others are set up by regional organizations, such as the Potomac H i g h l a n d of W. V a . , P.O. Drawer G. Romney; and the Country Roads Travel Council, P. 0. Box 1257, Parkersburg. The most complete set-up by far -- it could be called the clearing house for all -- is the Travel Division of the West Virginia Department of Commerce. If you want to know practically a n y t h i n g about travel in West Virginia, the staff there can either answer your questions quickly or tell you where to find the answers. Now the Department of Commerce Travel Division is going another step. It is operating five information centers on major highways coming in to West Virginia and hopes to open up four others by the end of this year. Those now open are located on 1-64 at Huntington, on U.S. 60 at White Sulphur Springs, in the Capitol Rotunda, at Kanawha Airport, and at Harpers Ferry. Hopefully, two others -- on 1-81 in the Eastern Panhandle near Martinsburg will be opened with the next two months; and two more (on I- 77 at Parkersburg, and 1-70 at Wheeling) by the end of the year. These highway information centers are, of course primarily designed to help out-of- state tourists, who may know little or nothing about West Virginia. They are handsome buildings with rest rooms, picnic facilities, and free soft drinks. Of course, they are also stocked with brochures, maps, directories and information on local attractions. They are open around-the- clock so that travelers coming into West Virginia at any hour of the day or night can be given help. Records of the Commerce Department i n d i c a t e that such information centers fulfill a real need. For example, the Huntington center helped 6,738 travelers in March of this year, and the one at White Sulphur Springs was used by 6,449 in April. In December, when you normally would t h i n k not many out-of-state visitors were coming to West Virginia, the Huntington center had 2.638 visitors, and the one at White Sulphur Springs, 1,485. Shiny black "Shay" steam locomotives still go into deep forests, recreating for citizens of the 1970's what was commonplace in 1905. Youngsters, many of whom have never seen an "Iron Horse," literally j u m p for joy; and adults find it easy to remember the bygone era of steam engines on American Railroads: as billowing clouds of black sulfurous-smellirig coal smoke, a clear and melodic whistle, end the hiss of clean white steam announce the departure of the train. The clickity-clack of steel wheels on steel rails counts the d i s t a n c e as the t r a i n swings out of the Greenbrier River Valley and onto the steep, winding tracks that saw sixty years of continuous use hauling more than one billion board feet of lumber to market (plus an equal volume of pulpwood.) The Cass Scenie Railroad is no amusement park! Powerful engines, designed especially for this work, must move the cars up grades where the average climb is four to five feet up for each hundred feet forward. At one time before the train reaches its mountain-top terminal the grade will reach an astonishing rise of thirteen feet up for each hundred feet of travel. Along Leatherbark Creek, the rails cling tenaciously to steep banks. Then, after passing through one of the few remaining switchbacks anywhere in the United States, the train rushes into an open meadow -- breaking out of the dense hardwood forests into a panorama of beauty that has every passenger reaching for his camera. Through a second switchback, the train reverses direction and struggles up a 10 per cent grade into Whittaker. Whittaker Station, surrounded by green meadows and fine views, offers a cool, shady picnic grove with tables where excursionists may rest and enjoy the scenery. The stop has drinking water, rest rooms, and snack stand. Some trains terminate here -- returning to the Cass Depot after a fifteen minute stop-over. For most passengers, Whittaker is a pleasant pause on their ride into America's last eastern wilderness. Leaving the open slopes and hardwood forests, the Shay pushes hard to move the old lumber flatcars-turned passenger coaches back onto stiff grades into a changing forest that now contains a predominance of evergreens. Panoramas of the lofty Appalachians become more beautiful as the train climbs higher and higher. Passengers suddenly realize they are entering a comp l e t e l y d i f f e r e n t w o r l d , mainly because of the change in trees, flowers, and atmosphere. By climbing the 2,390 feet from Cass (2452 feet) to Bald Knob (4842 feet), passengers have made the equivalent to an 800-mile trip to Canada in climate because of the higher altitude. Here are found spruce trees, snowshoe hares, moss and lichens, and other plants and animals typical of the far north. Naturalists term the high country a "bit of Canada gone astray." At Bald Knob Terminal -the second highest spot in West Virginia - the train takes a well deserved rest while passengers visit the rust i c t r a c k s i d e o v e r l o o k . D w a r f e d by d i s t a n c e and beauty, this is one of the most awesome, o v e r w h e l m i n g spectacles in the East. In the faint distance is the giant 300-foot radio telescope and landing strip of the National Radio Astronomy Observato- ry at Green Bank. A remarkable contrast between the wilderness at Bald Knob and today's space-age facilities! Visitors to Bald Knob may also enjoy an unparalleled visit with nature by walking through the nearby hundred- acre stand of virgin spruce trees. Their towering canopy seems to reach to the very heavens, as the quiet stillness is broken only by the rustling of wind through the green mantle overhead. Nearby Bald Knob Fire Tower is the only other man-made structure in nearly 100 square miles -- a true wilderness. Back at the train, passengers watch and photograph the century-old ritual as engineer and brakeman oil around, "wipe" and ready the equipment while the fireman shovels more coal into the Shay's roaring inferno, orange flames leaping from the firebox, as he adds fuel to make steam for the return trip to Cass. Then, as the whistle calls into the quiet forest, the conductor drawls the traditional "Aaaall Aboarrrrd"! The return trip is punctuated by squealing brakes and hissing of the air pumps as the cars and engine strain through the curves and back down the mighty mountain. The personable narrator, points out the location of an old logging camp here, a wild animal there, perhaps spins a yarn or legend that is as old as the logging industry, or just passes on a bit of "fact" to be accepted by the passengers. There's a quick glimpse of the old town of Spruce in the distance! This was the legendary town that connected with civi- lization only through the lumber railroad. For 40 years, one thousand persons lived and worked in Spruce, the highest town in eastern America. Once, in 1927, it was 42 below zero there -- an eastern record. Now, the town is only history, but lives again for a moment while attentive passengers ponder the words of their host as he tells of the "glory days." Whether you select the 22 mile round-trip tour to Bald Knob, taking about four and one half hours; or travel the eight mile line to Whittaker and back (a two hour run), a ride on the Cass Scenic Railroad is an unforgettable experience for the whole family.
