Wildwater Expeditions Unlimited, managed by Jon Dragan. is organized to take tourists from Prince to Fayette Station on the most exciting stretch of white water in the East. Dragan and his crew are veteran guides, licensed by the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources. They have been selected on the basis of character, congeniality, competency, and are completely professional and experienced outdoorsmen. The equipment used is the finest in the business. The rafts, which each hold from eight to ten passengers, are especially designed for the New River Canyon and are constructed of vulcanized neoprene rubber, compartmented and unsinkable. They are sturdy and provide comfort as well as safety while running the wildest rapids. And the rapids can be wild -- from eight to sixteen feet in places. Float trips are divided into two p a r t s , each a b o u t 15 miles, or both may be com- · bined into a two-day trip. Every d a y . f r o m . May through October, the big rafts are assembled on a sandy beach near Prince at 9 a.m. and the first day's run begins downstream. Rapids on the first day run are modest and the trip ends at Thurmond, where guests are served dinner and sleep overnight in platformed tents. The second day's run, from Thurmond to Fayette Station is the hairy part. Sheer canyon walls and foaming wild- water provide thrills you will never forget. Prior the trip, each person is provided with a life jacket and precise safety instructions. No matter what, none of the rules may be broken. The guides run a "tight ship" and a safe journey is assured. Frequent stops permit rafters to fish, hike, and take pictures along the way. A shore lunch is provided each day. Waterproof bags are supplied to those who bring along cameras. Wildwater Expeditions Unlimited supplies tents with platforms, guides, all river equipment including life jackets, which must be worn at all times, and the food. Although all camping is primitive, the food is deluxe: bacon, pancakes, steaks, fresh salads and fruits. Meals begin with breakfast on the first day and end with lunch on the river the second day. You must supply a bathing . suit, sunglasses, and suntan lotion. Everyone must wear sneakers. For spring and fall trips, long underwear, wool socks, sweaters and wind breakers should be worn. Wet suits -- a limited'number are available for Tent -- are the greatest for cold weather. For the two-day trip, you will also have to supply your own sleeping bag, air mattress or rubber pad, warm jacket, jeans and/or shorts, shirts, underwear, socks, raincoat or poncho, towel, and insect repellent. If you plan to fish, you bring along your own gear. Wildwater Expeditions Unlimited is based at Thurmond, where there are parking facilities for your car. There is usually a social hour prior to dinner in the evenings, and many guests bring along a pre-dinner cocktail. But, there is no alcohol permitted on the river. You are welcome to camp with Wildwater Expeditions in Thurmond before you take your trip and tenting is at your disposal, but you must provide your own meals. From the base c a m p at Thurmond, you are transported upriver to Prince for the beginning of the first day's run, and back to Thurmond from Fayette Station after the second day. Three times a year, in August, September and October, Wildwater Expeditions tackle 22 miles of wildwater through rugged mountain country on the Gauley River. These trips are so rugged they are limited to 16 persons who have white- water experience -- at least two trips on the lower section of New River with Wildwater Expeditions Unlimited. If you know nothing about r u n n i n g W h i t e w a t e r , b u t would like to try, the two-day New River run is recommended. This allows the guides time to acquaint you with the proper techniques in paddling and handling the rafts. For the second day run, you have to be over 14 years old and able to swim 25 yards in a straight line. Babysitters are available if you are a parent with small children. NOW OPEN SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.
