9A --June 13, 1976 Sunday Charleston, west Virginia Five Senators Urge Alaska Pipeline Use WASHINGTON (API-Senators from five Northern Tier states have joined in sponsoring legislation aimed at bringing Alaska pipeline oil into their region as soon as possible. The measure would urge President Ford 10 immediately allocate an equitable share of this oil for the area, which now relies heavily on crude oil imported from Canada. "It is highly important that new crude 011 supplies be brought into the Northern Tier region as soon as possible if a viable crude oil refining industry, so vital to this region, is to be maintained." said Sen. Mike Mansfield. D-Mont.. the principal sponsor. Mansfield said these refineries are threatened by growing reductions in the oil delivered from Canada. The resolution was introduced last week and is now before the Senate Interior Committee. President Ford already has authority under existing law to allocate oil from the pipeline, which is still under construction, or from any other new reserves. Mansfield said the measure also seeks to persuade Ford to allocate a fair share of oil from the Elk Hills Naval Petroleum Reserve, when it begins production, to the Northern Tier states. Noting that Canada has threatened to cut off oil exports by 1981, Mansfield said "the elimination of Canadian crude, if not promptly replaced by other sources, will mean economic hardships for every farmer, merchant, business and individual in the Northern Tier states."
