Byner's show premieres Tuesday By Chariec Witbeck HOLLYWOOD -- Having completed his quota of early summer variety hours in the Glen Campbell spot, Georgia songwriter Jerry Beed hands the baton to the unassuming comedian, John By' ner, this Tuesday, August 1, for an experimental run of five shows. An easy-going fellow with an ingratiating throwaway approach to material offstage, writer-singer Jerry Reed was asked to front a show that counted upon an 83-year-old comedienne, a man who made music with his hands, and a poor imitation of Don Knotts. Instead of being backed by power, poor Reed was saddled by dead wood. He is back in Tennessee now, fishing for bass, in control of his own environment again. Joto Byner, the quiet, f r e c k l e d , redhead who wears granny glasses and can make strangers laugh in supermarkets, should have better luck since he has some voice in the show format. The comic and his manager, Harry Colomby, have always written John's material, and are working hand-in glove with h i r e d gagmen for the August outings. John doesn't intend to revolutionize the variety format during the mini-series, playing instead for a slight attitude change--"a little bit of irreverence." Known for his impressions of Ed Sullivan and the talk shows of the mid-Ws, Byner has moved on, leaving the limited field after extracting the needed breakthrough mileage. Looking for character spots in situation comedy, the comic turns up at readings and manages to confound local producers who prefer to categorize performers. Though John could be taken for an introverted college professor, he played a Greek mechanic on the Don Rickles Show, impressing boss Sheldon Leonard, who asked the comic to take up slack in a Michele Lee pilot by portraying a thief. Leonard was vague about the character, so John turned the man into an apologetic bungler, and furnished the only chuckles In toe mishmash. On his own show, Byner will sing, do monologues and concentrate on sketches which he hopes may contain TV Movies Friday "Search," 8:30 p.m., Q) Q © CD (0 with Hugh O'Brien and Elke Sommer, * * * "Portrait of · Mobster," (1361) ·*, 9 p. m., ifj) with Vic Morrow and Leslie Parrish, * * * "Oceans Eleven," (i960) **%, 11:30 p.m., © w i t h Frank Sinatra and D e a n Martin. G. Brown, Linda Subbell and Patti Deutsch. Byner has big advantage over predecessor Reed in that he knows the writing staff well, and is encour- CMtiMte4 On Page 10S) · Bcflquets · Sales Meetings · Picnics · Private Parties · V/::Ming receptions **g*«*N|W« tltoW, «·«*«·· ipcrt Serria on Color A Black White TV sets, oil Malm.
