41 July 20, 1975' **" Y'*9*» ---Space Flight, Abortion, Books Called Destroyers of Freedom By Kty Michael International space exploration, legalized abortion, and satanic textbooks were listed by Betty Bates Saturday as components of a conspracy to destroy individual freedom. Mrs. Bates, who has fought regional government and land use laws in Utah, was in the area to speak at a Saturday dinner designed to recruit presidential support for George Wallace. However, she wasn't aware that she had been brought to Kanawha County to endorse the Alabaman. "I want to withhold my choice of a presidential candidate." she said, "until 1 know how the choices are." She said she hadn't seen the newspaper ad publicizing her appearance on behalf of the politician. Mrs. Bates was scheduled to speak at 7 p.m. at the St. Albans Bonanza Restaurant. The ad said "the primary objective is to begin now organizing political support for Gov. George Wallace for President in 1976." * * * ALTHOUGH SHE declined to discuss personalities, she was outspoken in her opinion of what's wrong with the United States. Moves to regionalize government, she said, are efforts "to remove from local citizens control over local officials." . Proposed changes in the U.S. Constitu- ; tion. she went on, are a "mindless march ' toward dictatorship. I want to alarm citizens to the fact that this is coming and the BETTY BATES Fears Loss of Freedom. .. target date for changing the Constitution is next July 4.. . "Abortion and textbooks are all involved in the regional government movement. All these things have been issued by the Supreme Court which is part of government. Textbooks are a long-range program issued by those who control our govern- ment. Regional government is the culprit." » » * SHE BELIEVES, she said, in an international conspiracy to control all government, not just the United States. Last week's Soviet-American space probe, she said, is a result of that conspiracy. "Kissinger (Secretary of State Henry Kissinger) has been running all over the world having detentes," she said, "and in the process of those detentes, he's aiding in the takeover of other countries. How long will God allow this?" Forces of God and Satan, she said, are struggling for control of the world. The Constitution, she said, was divinely inspired. "The men brought together to sign the Constitution were inspired by God." For that reason, she said, it shouldn't be changed. Saturday's dinner meeting was sponsored by the Rev. Ezra Graley and other leaders of the county textbook protest. Mrs. Bates said protesters were "to be commended for their courageous stands for the lives of their children. Parents should be in control of what their children read."
