UA Jttiv 20, 1975 Is Azores Rebellion Brewing? §· Pott* Winder PONTA DELGADA. Azores Islands \S -- Independence from Portugal is being considered opealy in the Azores islands. But political and military leaders have predicted the final break won't come unless there is a virtual Communist takeover in Lisbon. Nonetheless, a break from the central government could prove perilous for Portugal's leftist military leadership at a time when the country already is shaken by internal political strife. Pressure from the nine green islands in the Atlantic 900 miles west of Lisbon already is so strong that the central government has agreed to give the Azores partial autonomy. Details of a program are expected soon. The i*$re4ients, however, for a possiWe uaiiatwal dedaranea of indepeadeaee indicate even autonomy may art suffice after years of what Az/oreaas eoasider abuse," lack of financial help aad treatment as second-class Portuguese. * * * THE ISLANDS, conservative Roman Catholic population is firmly opposed to communism, almost 180 degrees away from leftist treads in the mainland. The Centrist Popular Democrat Party (PPD) in the Azores is the political force after winning 66 per cent of the votes in the April elections for a constituent assembly. On the mainland, the PPD finished second behind the Socialists with 26 per cent. Communists, a poor third on the mainland, were even less powerful in the Azores, finishing with only 2 per cent. Any open rebellion by Azoreans against the eeairal goverwaeat might prow too cosily a«4 too diffieylt miUtarih tot the Usboa goverMoeal to put down. Portugal has f surer than 2.0W troops stacked up against m,m Azoreans. Communka- Analysis tions are difficult, landing strips few and most of the troops irom sergeant on down are Azoreans. On June 6, a farmers' rally suddenly turned into an independence demonstration when agitators from a group called the Azores Liberation Front (FLA) closed down Ponta Delgada airport and seized the radio station. The FLA led the action, but it was clear many other Azoreans agreed with them. There is talk in the cafes and the island newspapers of letting Azoreaos vote on whether they want independence or autonomy. Gen. Altino Pinto Magalhaes, military commander of the Azores, has been given authority by Lisbon's ruling Revolutionary Council to name a local governing board to handle the new autonomy program. · * « * THE GENERAL, who mostly trains troops at ancient Fort Sao Braz in Ponta Delgada, said Azoreans will have direct control over then- economy, transport, commerce, welfare, labor, education, immigration, agriculture, fishing and tourism. There is a growing feeling here, too, that the Azores, almost self-sufficient except for petroleum and wheat, would be better off economically without mainland control. One of the demands the PPD is pushing is that Azoreans be included in negotiations to continue American military presence on Terceira Island. Ponia Delgada's harbor normally has one of two ships from NATO in for servicing and crew leaves. Public sentiment for a possible break is increasing but still not defined. shop mondays and fridays 10 to 9 other weekdays 10 to 5 phones 346-0981 SEEDED VOILE PANDORADOOR WINDOW PANELS CAPE COD SHEERS ElANESE'l-ORTREL' KLVESTEN nun KARPEL SHEER DELIGHTS Fortrel® Polyester curtains make the inside of your home as light and airy as it is outside These Fortrel® polyester curtains in a sheer airy, Ninon weave, wash effortlessly, require little or no ironing.
