17F--JulySO, 1972 Sunday _ . _ . Charleston, WMt Virgini DORM Room Can Be Great, Or It Can Be Ho-Huni By Connie Shearer Arid now it's back to the campus and back to the dorm. And that can be great or it can be no-hum. How your room in the dormitory looks is entirely up to you, because no matter how it looks, .you're the one who has to live there--and nine months can be a long time. In most dorms these days, students have a reasonably free hand in doing their own thing as far as decor is concerned. Students don't have a lot of time to do housecleaning, so one thing to keep in mind as you work out a plan for your room is simplicity and a design that is easy to keep in order. * *· * A BIG ECONOMIC boon to decorating these days is decorative shades rather than draperies for the windows. Pretty shades in your choice of colors and some in patterns with ball fringe are available from Sears, Roebuck and Spiegel catalogue order departments. These shades can set the color theme for choosing the simple corded bedspreads made by Bates or other textile companies and are available in most department stores. Now, if you're really ingenious, you can start by b u y i n g a b o u t a d o z e n patterened sheets. (All the Renovation Is Heavy In Countv » More than $110.000 is being spent for painting, relighting, and new areas for biology and music at Stonewall Jackson High School, one of several schools undergoing renovation by the Kanawha County Board of Education. An estimated $56,000 is being spent for work at Thomas Jefferson Junior High S c h o o l . T h e s c h o o l ' s auditorium is being changed to a gymnasium, showers and locker rooms are being installed and the administrative suite is being renovated. J. E. Robins Elementary School is getting a new kitchen and its administrative suite is being enlarged at a cost of about $33,000, Two new classrooms are being built at Cross Lanes Elementary. Estimated cost is $56,000. About $28,000 is being spent at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School for a new fire alarm system, administrative suite, and improving the toilets. A new addition to Belle Elementary includes a conference room and additional toilets. The corridors are being refinished and new lights are being installed. The cost will be about $20,000. The renovations and remodeling are part of the 1966 buidling program. Bonds were sold to raise $36 million. Construction has totaled more than $42 million. same pattern, of course.) The choice of design depends on your particular taste. There are dozens of patterns and colors available and some of the leading fashions people, e.g., Pucci and Vera have put their designs on bed linens and towels. If the room has only one window, you .start by using a pair of twin flats (another name for sheets that are not fitted) and some pleater tape found in any drapery department and create your own draperies. I suggested you would need a pair of flats, but if your room has long narrow windows sometimes seen in larger structures, there's a chance you could split a sheet for each window, * *· * THAT TAKES care of the windows, but, by the way, it's most effective to use window shades in one of the soft colors in the drapery design. Now the bed--use a fitted sheet of the same design, or a solid color, if you choose, over the mattress cover; next, a patterned flat; next, a coordinated color blanket for the cold months ahead; next, a flat instead of the usual bedspread. Use a matching pillow case as a pillow sham; The keep the sham looking always fresh and free of hair "stuff" and face cream, you can use two pillow cases--one to take off at night and the other to sleep on--but remember, tidy up the bed every morning and replace the sham. NOW, HERE COMES the really different touch which is guaranteed to give your room individuality and you and your roomie privacy. By the way, we're assuming that your roommate is compatible when it comes to decorating your room. It's hard to imagine all this on just one side of the room. Now, take four twin flats and pleat them with the same pleating tape. At each pleat sew a brass curtain ring. That should entail about five rings per sheet. Then use small brass hooks, (the kind on which you usually hang pot holders) which have been screwed into the ceiling and hang a curtain at each corner of the bed. A fluffy area rug between the beds makes getting up a little easier each morning. Most patterned sheets have coordinated towels and wash cloths. They would be a must if you choose to drape your room in sheets. THUS, YOU HAVE given your room a custom look and still haven't used any of that precious space needed for desks and a couple of comfortable chairs. One add touch--how about a. round table between the beds with a tablecloth cut from a matching sheet. This over-all idea would work in the men's dorm too, if you choose sheets in the bold stripe or jungle designs,.
