--June 2. 1974 Sunday Gazette-Mail n, West VirginiaTM -Salmon's Sculpture Fishy Putnam GED Test Dates Told By Mike Silverman O R I C K , C a l i f . - (* Townspeople, politicians and fishing enthusiasts gathered Saturday to unveil a five-ton redwood sculpture in memory of a one-pound salmon who be- ·came a legend in his own itime. Fittingly, the formal dedication ceremony was staged in front of the Humboldt Coun- "ty Prairie Creek Fish Hatchery. It was there, 10 years ago, that a silver salmon nick;named Indomitable defied both probability and modern plumbing by swimming from ·a stream through a maze of drainage pipes back into the h a t c h e r y ' s r e a r i n g pond where he was born. * * * THE EVENT made news well beyond this little coastal village of 800 persons about 60 miles south of the Oregon border. Floyd Davis, a sculptor from nearby Crescent City. was so inspired by the story he volunteered two years of labor to create the 21-foot-long wooden likeness. "They felt that because the fish was from this hatchery, this would be the place to put it," said Joanne Sanders, assistant manager at the hatchery. "It's hanging from steel posts about nine feet up right as you come in the f r o n t gate,x~1he said. "They raised it up so you could see it from the highway and to keep people from climbing on it." * + * INDOMITABLE'S FEAT was revealed to the world on Dec. 2,1964, when workers at the rearing pond found the 2-year-old, 14-inch-long salmon among the newborn finger- length fish. The realignment of administrative responsibilities will be effective July 1. The GED test measures the nonhigh school graduate's educational achievement. It is accepted by business, government and college institutions. Any person aged 19 or older who hasn't graduated from high school is eligible for the exam if he has been out of the formal classroom for a period of one year, or whose high school class has graduated. Notice of intent to take the test should be sent a week in advance of the test to Mrs. Flora Vaughn, test examiner at the vocational-technical school. The test will be given a second time beginning at 5:30 p.m. July 11 and 8 a.m. July 13. FATHER'S DAY GIFTS * Tools · Trains ·Modek ·Hobbycrafts FOUNTAIN HOBBY CENTER Corner W. Wash. "We Putnam Panel Revival Urged SCOTT DEPOT - The Teays Valley Land Use Planning Assn. has asked the Putnam C o u n t y Court to add three members to the Putnam County Planning Commission in order to revive the commission. Andy Jones of Scott Depot, chairman of the Teays Valley association, said this action came at the g r o u p ' s May meeting. "We're strictly a nonpolitical b o d y , " a d d e d Jones. "Democrats, Republicans and independents are all interested in future land use in the valley." Tom Hankins, a lifelong resident of Teays Valley, emphasized that it isn't the association's intention to infringe on a resident's right to do what he pleases on his land "as long as it does not cause a health hazard to the community." Hankins added: "While we may not like our neighbors piling j u n k in their yards or burning trash, we respect their rights. Our concern is to make sure that future shopping areas, schools, apartments, etc., are situated in suitable locations to preserve a high quality of living." Another speaker was Paul Brant of the Soil Conservation Service, who contended that propoer land planning leads to a more prosperous community. The next meeting of the as- sociatiion will be 7:30 p. m. June 20 at the Scott Depot Fire House. High School Attended BEOG 74 Redwood 'Indomitable' and Creator Floyd Davis couldn't figure out where he came from. A THOROUGH i n q u i r y showed that Indomitable's j o u r n e y from t h e stream where he had been released after he was reared at the hatchery took him through a twisting path of narrow drain- age pipe, i n c l u d i n g a 90-degree turn and one 2Vz- foot vertical jump. Finally, to break into the rearing pond, he had to ram his way past a wire mesh screen. Saturday's festive civic tribute was the brainchild of Ray Peart, chairman of the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors who helped get civic groups to donate the money for Davis' materials. Peart arranged a program that included several speeches, an invocation, a vocal solo, and a f l a g s a l u t e by Girl Scout Troop 41. Old photOS Copied !
