9F--July 30, 1972 Season Promising AtWVU By A. L. Hardnuin MORGANTOWN-Something new has been added to the West Virginia U. football schedule, like, for instance, seven home games. With Coach Bobby Bowden coming up with potentially the greatest team the Mountaineers have fielded in some time, it is comforting to know that only four of their 11 games will be played away from the AstroTurfed playing field in Morgantown. But -all four of the games booked for foreign soil are with toughies--Stanford. Virginia, Temple and old rival Pitt. And two of these are back-to-back road games, early in the season. BOBBY BOWDEN VIRGINIA is the third game on the schedule, being booked for a Sept. 23 meeting in old and somewhat outmoded Scott Stadium in Charlottesville. And the very next week, the Mountaineers are booked to play the Iridians of Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. If they can get through those two games, needless to say the Mountaineers will get the national headlines. The home schedule includes games with such teams as Villanova, Richmond, William and Mary, Tulane, Penn State and Syracuse. The Nittnny Lions of Penn State arc- making their second straight appearance at Mountaineer Field because West Virginia made successive visits to University Park in 1969 and 1970. VMI originally.was booked as a "road" game but the Keydets, .knowing how well WVU football draws, figured they could make more money with a slice of the g a t e receipts in Morgantown than they could p l a y i n g West Virginia at Lexington, Va.. or anywhere -else. * * * AND SO, INSTEAD of a 6-5 schedule for home and away they will go into the season with a 7-4 lineup. Ticket ' manager Tom Grayson already is feeling the "pinch" of a ticket shortage. He is getting applications for the Penn State game in bales and there is a great deal of interest in the Tulane and Syracuse games. The opener with Villanova on Sept. 9 also promises to pack in close to 30,000. Here's how the Mountaineers will play: Sept.' 9--Villanova, 1 6 -- R i c h m o n d , 2 3 -- A t Virginia, 30--At Stanford. · Oct. 7--William and Mary, 14--At Temple (night game), 21-Tulane, 28-Penn State. Nov. 4-At Pitt, 11-VMT, 18--Syracuse. BhandL ESPECIALLY PRICED FOR AUGUST!
