But from the beginning, disappointment seems to have been as much a part of its product as the flour it was intended to manufacture. It was a grist mill that represented the builder's hopes for a sound business investment in Southwestern Pennsylvania. In 1774, when the mill was being constructed in an area where it would serve about 70 families, it appeared an excellent investment to the land-oriented George Washington, who had it built. Undoubtedly, he had plans for future speculative ventures in Southwestern Pennsylvania, for he acquired title to other lands in the area. The times proved to be his enemy in that respect. Washington became preoccupied with more critical matters. Matters that would make him eventually the first President of the U.S. Only the stone foundation stands today of what was once described as "the best mill" seen anywhere. The infrequent visitor to the runs of the mill is filled with disappointment at the sad repair into which the edifice has fallen. A similar disappointment must have been Washington's upon returning from the Revolutionary War when he learned that no profits had accrued to his name after almost seven years of what should have been profitable operation. Was it mismanagement by a man named Gilbert Simpson, or outright thievery? No one knows for sure, but Washington attempted to sell the grist mill and surrounding land. Many came to see him, but not to bid on the mill. He could find no buyer for whatever the reason. - Washington finally leased his once promising business enterprise to a man named Col. Israel Shreve and later sold it and the land surrounding it in 1795 to this same Shreve. But Shreve never paid in full for the land; even though he made a tidy profit for himself on resale of the land. In 1799, Washington and Shreve both died without a satisfactory settlement being reached. The relic of Washington's grist mill that still stands in Perryopolis, Pa. has been scheduled for complete restoration.
