Box 8247, Norfolk, Va. 23503 By Maury Kane Today, nearly 125 years after the discovery of gold in California opened The Far West to the greatest migration in history, this exciting region is still a land of discovery for tourists, according to Discover American Travel Organizations. DATO has designated The Far West as one of nine vacation designation regions. National and state parks, as well as wilderness areas, preserve much of the pristine beauty of The Far West, a vast area encompassing the states of California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Alaska. Visitors to California's Yosemite National Park still experience the same thrill that Major Jim Savage and his men of the Mariposa Battalion felt when they first gazed on Yosemite Valley's glacier carved domes, tumbling waterfalls and lush Alpine meadows in 1851. Centuries-old sequoias are protected in Yosemite's Mariposa Grove in Sequoia, Kings Canyon N a t i o n a l Park, in the new Redwood National Park, in Northern California and in reserves elsewhere in the state. California's Lassen Volcanic National Park preserves an awesome scene of volcanic fury. The state's 21 Franciscan missions, faithfully restored, recall the days of Spanish rule. Settlements built of mud and canvas by the pioneers are now major cities, each with its own distinct personality. »· Discovery of the fabulous Comstock Lode of silver in Virginia City, many of its original buildings restored, provides a popular side trip for visitors to nearby Reno, one of the state's major gaming centers. Las Vegas is newer, bigger, gaudier. Its glittering resorts offer probably the greatest concentration of entertainment in the world. The Nevada shore of Lake Tahoe, on the Nevada-California boundary, is fast becoming a rival to Las Vegas as a showplace. Nevada's recreation assets also include 115-mile- long Lake Mead, which backs up the Colorado River behind Hoover Dam near Las Vegas, and the High Sierra ski areas of Mount Rose near Reno and Lake Tahoe. Visitors to Oregon find the same vast rivers, rich forests, fertile valleys and snowy slopes that lured the state's first settlers, who followed the trail blazed by Lewis and Clark through Idaho, Oregon and Washington in 1805. Today's travelers come to fish, hunt, ski, roam un- crowded beaches and just soak up the scenery. Oregon has no less than 13 national forests, as well as one national park--Crater Lake. Ski slopes abound in the Cascades, Wallowas and other Oregon mountains. Lofty Mount Hood, near Portland, has some of the best skiing in the Northwest. Bountifully endowed with scenic treasures, Washington has 24 million acres of forests and three national parks--Olympic, Mount Rainier and North Cascades. Puget Sound, with 2,000 miles of shoreline, is a boating enthusiast's Eden. Altogether Washington has 10,000 miles of bay and Pacific shoreline, as well as 8,000 lakes and several rivers lacing the state. There's top skiing on Mount Rainier, Snoqualmie Pass, Mount Spokane, Stevens and Mount Baker. Seattle Center, built for the 1962 World's Fair, is still ·a major attraction. The monorail zips visitors from downtown Seattle to the 607-foot Space Needle, with its revolving restaurant and observation platform. The neighboring state of Idaho is several lands in one. Stretching southerly from the Canadian border, Idaho has virgin rain forests, icy peaks, a volcanic wasteland, fertile farmlands and a 3 million-acre Primitive Area where grizzly bear, bighorn sheep and moose roam wild. The state also has the deepest canyon in North America--Hells Canyon, 7,900 feet. Idaho's fishing and hunting rival any in the nation. Each year, fishermen take more than 10 million trout from the state's 2,000 lakes and 35,000 miles of rivers and streams. Foremost among Idaho's many ski areas is world-famous Sun Valley. The most westerly state, Alaska, is immense. It covers an area one fifth as large as the rest of the United States. It was also a gold strike that gave Alaska its start-the discovery of gold in Canada's Yukon Territory in 1897. Alaska was the sourdoughs' passageway. Then, in 1899, Alaska had a gold strike of its own. Most of the state's tourism is concentrated in the southeastern region where cruise ships and marine ferries ply the fjord-like "Inside Passage," and call at quaint fishing villages. Ships also take passengers among icebergs and along blue-white glaciers. AlaskaVMount McKinley-at 20,320 feet, the highest peak in North America- attracts climbers and "lookers" to Mount McKinley National Park. The Far West is still a young land w i t h m u c h growth ahead--but its leaders are determined that growth will not come at the expense of its precious natural treasures. ttrtttlf On The Oteon...
