Pleasant family fare. Animal lover George Apple takes on the establishment over conditions in a wretched little zoo. Apple is so angry, he brings the annimals home for safekeeping. Children will enjoy the tale as each member of the family becomes responsible for the assorted menagerie, while the game warden and local zoning laws provide the conflict Apple must face. 7:30 p.m. CBS. O © »· WORLD OF DISNEY. "The Whiz Kid and the Mystery at Riverton." Part II. (Repeat). A show for the young and innocent, as sixth- graders outsmart corrupt city politicians in a tale based on Clifford B. Hick's books. A u d a c i o u s A l v i n (Eric Shea) wins a school essay contest and becomes mayor for a day. Taking over City Hall, the kids rifle files for evidence against the corrupt city treasurer and manage to foil the getaway of the swindlers. 7:30 p.m. NBC. O © © © © Watch for These Sundav COLUMBO. "Mind Over Mayhem." (Repeat). Jose Ferrer leads a stimulating guest cast in thin scientific- oriented, murder-mystery. "Happy-go-lucky" Columbo investigates the murder of a professor at the Cybernetic Research Institute run by Dr. Marshall Cahill (Ferrer). It seems the good doctor killed the professor (Lew Ayres), to keep him from revealing that Cahill's son ( R o b e r t W a l k e r ) was a scientific theory plagiarist. On his way to the "whole truth," Columbo meets a child genius and his pet robot who tosses him some unasked for, but helpful clues. 8:30 p.m. NBC. O ® © © © SPORTS SPECIAL. ABC is offering prime time network coverage of this year's famous Indianapolis "500" Television Movies Sundav "McHALE'S NAVY JOINS THE AIR FORCE," (1965 )**,! p.m.. ©with Joe Flynn and Tim Conway. TV series expanded to feature form again, this time without Ernest Borgnine. Tim Conway receives most of the attention, as he masquerades as an Air Force looey. Pure slapstick, for kiddies and fans of the TV series. »· "STRANGER WORE A GUN," (1953) »*, 2 p.m. ® with Randolph Scott and Claire Trevor. Randolph Scott fans will enjoy the lively gun-play of this routine Western. »· "JUNGLE MAN-EATER," (1954) "/ 2 , 3 p. m., QD with Johnny Weissmuller and Karen Booth. A zulu tribe and a diamond smuggling ring prove dangerous foes to Jungle Jim and his party. Jumbled jungle film. »· SKY COMMAND," (1953) **, 3:30 p . m . , QD w i t h Adam West and Burt Ward. This feature length version of the TV series employs the same zany characters and incidents which help to make the series popular. If you want to sit back and watch a comic book come to life, with more than a good share of tongue-in-cheek asides, see it. »· . "VALENTINO," (1951) **, 6 p.m., ® w i t h Anthony Dexter and Eleanor Parker. A romanticized version of the Valentino legend; produced in elaborate style'. Against a background of gaudy splendor of the early Hollywood days, the phenomenal career of Valentino unfolds. Anthony Dexter bears a striking resem ance to.the original "She of the Silver Screen," but that's where the resemblance ends. Dexter, under- s t a n d a b l y has never received another important part since this movie premiered. "TALES OF MANHATTAN," (1942) p.m., O with Charles Boyer and Ginger Rogers. An all-star cast in a series of unrelated dramas around a dress suit. Vignettes range from superb to mediocre. An interesting film. * "THE BANK DICK," (1940) ***Ml:30p.m.,O with W. C. Fields. As a reward for accidentally capturing a bank robber, Fields is made bank guard. One of the greatest comics of all time has a field day in this ridiculous film. "I SAW WHAT YOU DID," (1965) "V 2 , 11:30 p. m., © with Joan Crawford and John Ireland. Couple of teenage girls play a telephone prank, which upsets a murderer and makes them candidate for his next crime. Okay suspense drama with Crawford wasted in a minor role. Mon., foes, Wris, ONIY Cold Wave 5C50 v * Stevens Beauty Shop H3,$ununttjSlJ42-2i53 race, from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, Indiana 8:30 p m ABC. QD © »· JOAN SUTHERLAND: Who's A f r a i d of Opera? "Faust." (Repeat). One of the most effective in this series of mini-operas. Gounod's highly dramatic score for the classic story of Faust, the old scholar who sold his soul to the Devil for the joy of being young again, comes across with most of its power and excitement intact. Even the puppets add tension and suspense to the melodramatic goings-on, as they watch with bated breath, the tragic downfall of the lovely Marguerite. Joan Sutherland's vocal brilliance is very much in evidence as Marguerite, loved and betrayed by Faust. 8:30 p.m. ETV. © ® »· MASTERPIECE THEATER. "Upstairs, Downstairs." (Repeat). The British nanny comes up for scrutiny in this emotion- charged, problem-oriented episode, that takes a while to get started but is thoroughly absorbing once it takes root. Elizabeth, frustrated in her personal life, takes little notice of her baby daughter Lucy. So much so, she is absolutely furious with Sarah, who is appalled that the child is being entrusted to the care of a very old and infirm nanny. Tune in for the resolution of a situation that simply will not go away by itself. 9 p.m. ETV. © ® +· NBC NEWS PRESENTS: Special Edition. A provocative hour features three reports of interest, the most memorable of which is called the "War Within the War," and deals with a controversy between scientists and the D e p a r t m e n t of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW), over cuts in basic research t h a t the scientists deem a catastrophe. Don't miss the statements of scientists from some of our greatest medical centers, who are most critical of the judgement used in arriving at the cuts; evaluate them against the a r g u m e n t s made by the heads of HEW. The other two deal with Detroit's agonizing homicide rate, and an experiment permitting parolees to attend college. 10 p.m. NBC.
