The $13,000 three-bed- tumty (OEO) for a research and)room home has been appraised demonstration project. t The funding for the project, which subsidizes the initiation of a home prefabrication factory in Smithers, is over a 30-month period and wiE enable the operation to hire a total of 65 people. Tech had originally received $140,000 for the project last November. The project was designed to provide low-cost housing to poor people and also employment for 28 men, 20 of whom are former welfare recipients. Thus far, 18 homes have been constructed this year. With the new funding, Huey Perry, division director of Tech's Community Service Center, said, "We plan to build between 240 and 300 new homes. We might evenl develop a site where we can; build about 60 of them in onej place." j * * * THE 5500,000 was granted to! help the hard-core poor with below $2,000 per year income who cannot qualify for financial assistance under the 502 Farmers' Home subsidy program. Fifteen of the 18 families who have brought homes have been welfare recipients. A one percent financing with no down payment has been arranged through the FHA. In addition, the families have- received an initial low selling strated that it is possible to provide high-quality housing at low cost to the rural poor," Perry said. As a result of the program's success, through a grant of Title I of the Higher Education Act.i the Community Service Center will develop and implement training model which will assisl low-income individuals organizations in developing cost housing programs in their area.
