Repass 11:300 The Saint SO© Tennis © CD Movie 09 Rock Concert 11:45® Hour of Prayer By Jay Fredericks A couple of Sundays ago I asked how long the owners of WOWK-TV would continue to plow money into the station's news operation while WOWK remained in third place in the ratings behind WSAZ and WCHS. A letter from Leo M. MacCourt- ney, vice president and general manager of WOWK, says the station is prepared to fight it out for as long, presumably, as the checkbook holds out. "We are," he says,,"...well aware of the problems and challenges presented by the "viewing habit' to which you have referred . . . From the beginning we have been aware that the challenge in the Charleston-Huntington market is a long term one. We are here, I can assure you, for the long haul." MacCourtney says Gateway Communications Inc., the group which owns WOWK, is "no stranger to the challenge of building stations into top rated operations and maintaining them over years and years in that position." He says he feels that the station's new $850,000 tower will aid immeasurably in putting a better WOWK signal into more homes and that a number of promotions and contests are being readied to get viewers to sample the station and then, he hopes, stay with it. Viewers who want to see the CBS Thursday night movie at the time the network schedules it aren't having much luck even if they're on the cable. WCHS delays the network movie until 11:30 p.m. Thursdays/after running its own movie in the prime time period (which means the station can charge top rates for commercials and keep all the money rathir than just getting a cut from the commercials shown on the network). Subscribers to Capitol Ca- blevision are supposed to be able to see the network movie at the network's time by turning to Channel 11 where the cable picks up a Weston station. But the picture on Channel 11 usually is so bad that if you tried to watch an entire movie you'd wind up with an advanced case of eyestrain and a throbbing headache. I know I attempted to watch "The MacKenzie Break" on channel 11 one recent Thursday and I was forced to give up less than halfway through the movie when constant rolling and flickering made the picture impossible to see. (The trouble wasn't in my set since the picture was perfectly bright and clear and steady on all the other channels.) Capitol Cabtevision had a nice idea--bringing the CBS movie to its viewers at prime time--butthe execution has been lousy. Rumors are that the 1976-77 season may be the last one for "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" no matter that the ratings are still holding '' up. Show producers say they don't want to extend the life of the series beyond the "natural audience appeal" of the program. It's interesting that Miss Moore's thinking seems to be the same as that of Dick Van Dyke. Van Dyke, you will remember, shut down his still highly rated "Dick Van Dyke Show"on which Miss Moore was his costar--because, he said, it had gone on about as long as it should. It is, I suppose, the old show business adage about always leaving the audience wanting more. (Van Dyke, however, has tried a couple of comeback series which have failed to click.) MTM show fans, can console themselves with the thought that enough spinoffs have been engendered by the Moore show to keep them happy for years. "Rhoda" started last year and "Phyllis" begins this year. Before it's over, Ted Knight and Betty White probably will have shows of their own too.
