--J"^ 30, 1972 Sunday W««t Virslnia- y^ . _ -·»··=· ivwni, WMT Virginia Day After Death, Wallenda on Wire *, -nx-ws^* v«, \^'r w $*ww i s#?^^^flp»«^| , V* WHEELING, W. Va. (AP) Veteran circus star Karl Wall- enda. returned to the high wire here Saturday less than 24 hours after he watched, lot the · second time in a decade, a member of his family killed in a fall. "Our life .is show business, the 67-year-old leader of th "Flying Wafaxfeis'' said Satur day. "Without show busines we don't survive and we hav to exist." Richard Guzman, 29, husban of Wallenda's daughter Carla died Friday night after he fel some 60 feet near the end o the evening's performance bj the Wallenda-Leontini Circus performing here for the Osiris Shrine. Wallenda was walking a wire strung between light towers a the open-air Wheeling Islatic Stadium and Guzman climbed up one tower to take his father- in-law's balancing pole as he reached the end of the wire. Near the top of the tower Guzman touched a live wire and was knocked backward off the tower, police said. He landed, stunned, on a pair of electrical wires, then fell another 50 feet to the ground as more than 6,000 spectators looked on, Carla and three of their four children were at the circus when the accident happened, the elder Wallenda said. Saturday afternoon and evening she was to join her.father on the wire and the children were to put on their bicycle act. "I was pretty -steady," WaJi- enda said; "but I didn't know how to get down'." He decided to continue his walk and reach the ground by the same tower from which his son-in-law fell. Guzman landed on a reserve policeman who had rushed to break his fall, was revived by a volunteer nurse, then died at a local hospital. Offic'als ??id the cause of death was tentatively listed as head injuries. Wa'llenda also watched in 1982 as a seven man Wallenda family pyramid plummeted to the concrete floor of the Michigan State Coliseum in Detroit. Karl's nephew Dieter Schepp, 23, and Richard Faughnan, 29, were killed, his brother Hcrman. then fifl, suffered minor injuries, and his adopted son Mario was permanently paralyzed. j Karl saved himself in that accident by hanging by his legs from the wire. He also caught and held Schepp's 17-year-old sister Christina. In Sarasota, Fla., the family's home, Gunther Walienda, 44, a former member of the act and now a teacher, said Guzman had worked with the original Wallenda acl fotv about six years. He. and his wife toured with their own wire acl, for a while. Guzman fell from a wire about 12 years ago, Wallenda said, and spent nine months in a hospital. Gunther Wa!1"nda said a third member of the f a m i l y , who performed under the n a m e Yett.a W a l l e n d a . was k i l l e d in 1W3 in Omaha while performing with her husband Arthur Grotefent, a half-brother of Karl. Karl Wallenda said there was no indication of any danger a t j the stadium. He said me act he was doing wa s not as dangerous as some others he.does. When something does so *rong, he said, "you don't get out. of. the way," but Lake it as it comes. The elder Wallenda has talked often of retirement, but continues to perform. In 1970 when he was 65, he inched his way across an l.loo-foot cable some TOO above the floor of Tallulah Gorge at Tallulah "alls, Ga., m a walk he called the highlight of his 50-year career. Guzman's body was taken to a Wheeling funeral home to be prepared for the journey back to Florida.
