T h e S o c i e t y f o r t h e Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America will present "Salute to America"" at 8 p . m . , Saturday, June 12 at the M u n i c i p a l Auditorium. Yes man former classical performer By .Jim Carnes Patrick Moraz says he'? always been a Yes man, even though he's been in the band only a couple of years. In fact, he says, he made Yes music even before he knew the band existed. Moraz joined Yes in the summer of 1974, replacing keyboardist Rick Wakeman who left the group for a solo career. Critics were poised to cut him down, but Moraz says, "I've been a full member of the band since the first day." Swiss-born Moraz started work with the group in the summer of 1974. Five days after he met the members of Yes, he was in the studio working on their seventh album Re/over. He came to Yes with tremendous musical knowledge and an impressive list of credentials. Moraz began his keyboard contact at age 5, and he studied with the great Mozart interpreter Clara Haskil. Originally a classical concert performer, ironically, he was turned on to rock largely due to his attendance at a 1969 Montreux concert by the newborn Yes. The keyboardist's first band was · Mainhorse, formed around 1969. After their breakup, he did a tour of Japan with a Brazilian dance c o m p a n y a n d u p o n h i s r e t u r n formed a short-lived quarter with two Brazilian percussionists and a bass player. Returning to rock, Moraz formed Refugee in 1974 with ex-Nice members Lee Jackson and Brian Davison. The band had produced a single album when the call came from Yes, and Moraz accepted. Moraz said Sunday in an interview from his hotel room in Charleston that the question of Wakeman and being his replacement is "totally past. That was two years ago now." Asked about his effect on the music of Yes, Moraz said the effect is "probably from the inside--one of approach, or style. It's a kind of osmosis, I guess; I'm a direct ingredient, just as the other members are." Moraz has released a solo album, called i, and he discussed, briefly, his efforts apart from the band.
