Betty White, as Sue Ann Nivens, tries to make a monkey--or a lady--out of Murray (Gavin MacLeod) when he quits his job in the newsroom to become her producer on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," 9 p.m., Saturday, June 12 on CBS-TV. ABC plans mini-serials onRoosevelts HEY 1 ··" · · By Jay Fredericks ABC's "Eleanor and Franklin" two part dramatic special, which won seven Emmys, was so well received by both critics and viewers -- the second part barreled its way into'the top 20 shows for that week -- that two more more mini-serials are planned for next season based on Joseph Lash's two volume bioe- raphy of the Roosevelts. une will deal with the White House years and the other with Mrs. Roosevelt's career following the death of President Roosevelt. This interest by viewers in their country's history would seem to be an isolated case. None of the other dramas -- the six part Lincoln series based on the Carl Sandburg books, the programs on Benjamin Franklin -- attracted much audience attention. Network people feel that probably it was a combination of titillating political gossip -- the fact that President Roosevelt had carried on an affair with Lucy Rutherford had only been made public recently -- and a nostalgia for the 1930's, combined with some excellent acting and Sunday Solo carefully crafted sets that pushed the Roosevelt show in the ratings winner's circle. It's true that the 13 part series of "The Adams Family" on public television also drew fairly large audiences -- for public television -- initially but they didn't stay around for the full 13 weeks. The show, while lavishly produced and featuring good casts, overdid the Adams' importance a bit, making them too saintly and too dull. It's too bad that someone, somewhere, didn't seize of the idea of turning Gore Vidal's "1876" into a television mini-series for the bicentennial year. Vidal's work is a fine example of history-as-novel and probably could have pulled as many viewers as "Rich Man, Poor Man." »· Speaking of ABC, that network has decided not to give gavel-to- gavel coverage of the two national political conventions this summer. As it did in 1972, ABC says it will present nightly wrap-ups on the convention happenings and will break into regularly scheduled programs whenever anything of importance happens at the convention halls. The network will carry the roll call of the states in the presidential balloting in full. CBS and NBC plan to cover the conventions in full While ABC's decision might be understandable in a year in which some candidates had the nomination locked up, it really doesn't make much sense this year -- unless the situation changes before convention time. Wide open battles for the nomination would seem to be in prospect for both the Republicans and the Democrats and there probably will be more cliff hanging drama in Kansas City and New York than in a month of "Baretta" or "Starsky and Hutch." Sports-wise, however, ABC is planning 79\z hours of Olympic coverage from July 17 through Aug. 1. _ MB DEMONSTRA TION HOW! , ; SQ.FT.
