Now there is some reason for optimism that the United States' horrendous experience with a record high level of inflation in double digits may have passed its crest. If those trends of production, sales and inflation can be sustained, and if the sharp escalation of interest rates can be halted fairly soon, the complexion of the American economy would soon be assuming a much brighter hue. It would not leave the public and the business world without an ample quota of problems, but it would mean that some of the more serious ones, which had so bedeviled the economic scene earlier this year, would be mitigated considerably. For the public, there would remain the problem of allocating financial resources among a number of needs in a still excessively strong inflationary period and the ogre, somewhat paradoxically, of greater unemployment later in the year. Business still will have to cope with cost and productivity difficulties; the uncertainties of international trade, monetary and political relationships; critical shortages of some essential materials; the malaise of the stock market; possible labor strife later this year as some key unions seek to catch up with the erd-- sion of their workers' realT earnings, and the continuing' pressures for greater public : . regulation and scrutiny of.', business operations and for restrictions on profits. ' : SOME OF THOSE are beyond the control of business, but others have occurred because some parts of the business world have created their own creditability gaps -- a situation that can only be erased by more statesmanlike behavior on prices, profits and social issues. An easing of the torrid pace of inflation, however, would help correct many of the problems, improve^ confidence and inject more stability into the tottering" economy. ; , t The likelihood of such an eventuality has been enhanced by some significant recent developments on the farm and energy fronts that have shown up in a decline in some food prices, an easing in the upward sweep ofjWholesale prices and !a dramatic halving of the rise in consumer prices during April. - .. Prospects are good for further short-term abatement of the explosive rise in food prices, but the outlook for the cost of energy and industrial prices in general is somewhat more murky, as is the longeV- range prospect for farm and food prices.
