W«4» Vu-oloi* CRISP Cutting Expensive Details Gives Ranch Clean Look By Andy Lang The Associated Press .The elimination of expensive detailing helps to give this ranch its clean, crisp appearance. A good floor plan and many interior features add to its appeal as a house for complete family enjoyment. To the left of the center hall is anL-shaped living room-dining room arrangement. The living room is good-sized, with wide front windows enhancing the area. . Privacy is assured by the covered outdoor loggia onto which the windows face. : * * * GRACIOUS ENTRY arches from the front hall and between the living and dining rooms give visual balance -a hospitable, a i r y e f f e c t throughout, with the fireplace on the far wall as the focal point. The sliding doors in the dining room.ppen out to the patio, attractive and adaptable to all climate regions. A cathedral ceiling unites kitchen, breakfast room and . family room, a portion;of the house that projects into the rear patio area. The angled rear wall offers two sets of 6-foot sliding door units for the brightest, most inviting space at any time of day. Well-placed counters hold appliances right where. they will be most convenient for easy working patterns. A divider between the kitch- en and family room is a freestanding unit of counters, pass-through and cupboards overhead and below, practical for special storage and for service to the family room. * * * A BONUS of the center hall entry is the extra privacy afforded the bedroom wing. Sound buffers -- the hall, bathrooms and closets -make it almost as private as a second floor but with no steps to climb. The master bathroom has a stall shower; the family bathroom is compartment-styled. Architect Fenick A. Vogel has given special attention to the basement of Design R-65 and has shown how it can be utilized. There is a lavatory that serves the recreation and laundry areas, with a laundry chute as a convenience from the bedroom wing. The plumbing arrangement has the bar of the recreation room under the kitchen, the lavatory and the laundry area under the family bathroom, making for economical piping setups. * * * THE RECREATION room or, as it is designated on the floor plan of the basement, "the activitiy area", includes two storage closets and a refreshment bar. Outside, there is red cedar siding at the front. It can be painted or stained, as desired. Red cedar clapboards are sug- R-65 Statistics Design. R-65 has a living room, dining room, family room, kitchen, three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a foyer, totaling 1678 square feet. The architect has shown the basement can be divided for extra living space. There is a two-car garage, which is included in the over-all dimensions of 76' by 40' 11". Those dimensions also include the kitchen-family room rear prow extension and a portion of the suggested patio, which can be reached through sliding glass doors from the dining room, kitchen and family room. \\ \\ gested at the rear. An accent of brick on the wall around the front windows at the loggia section sets off the facade. There is a 2-foot roof over- hang around the entire house. If a ranch plan is the family choice, this house is equally at home in any type of community. S A S C M C N T - PLAN- -r£-o R-5 PL A M Time to Build Clock? Here's Answer Q. -- What's the difference between white shellac and clear shellac? A. -- None. What is usually called white shellac is actually clear shellac. It's transparent, but like all so-called clear finishes, it tinges the wood a bit. Q. -- In cutting molding, I never seem to cut the ends right so that they meet exactly like the corners of a picture frame. Is there some knack to this? A. -- Buy yourself a miter box, which is relatively inexpensive. There are slots in the box which will permit corner cuts to be made at exactly the right angle. Q. -- The finish in one part of our living room floor has worn off. The original finish is rather dull. Can I patch the worn area with varnish or shellac? A. -- It sounds as though a penetrating floor sealer was used when the floor was finished. Varnish or shellac will produce a glossy surface that will stand out from the rest of the floor. Try a penetrating floor finish to get a reasonable match. By Steve Ellingson Of all f u r n i t u r e pieces which have been handed down from the past, grandfather clocks must be the most treasured. To have survived the changes of time proves their value. Practically everyone has the desire to own a handsome grandfather's clock. The problem has always been the cost. The clock shown is just over 6 feet in height and was designed with two thoughts in mind... .economy and simplicity. It may be built to use an inexpensive weight-driven movement, or you can make it without weights and pendulum, using a flashlight battery-powered movement. In the latter case, shelves for knickknacks may be built into the pendulum area. Construction for this clock has been greatly simplified. The full-size pattern removes all the guess work. The major tool used is a table saw. Mouldings are stock items found in lumber yards everywhere. If your local dealer does not carry the top decorator carvings or the clock works, you may obtain them through the mail from the information given on the pattern. The type of wood used is optional. It can be solid lumber of maple, walnut, pine, or m a h o g a n y plywood. Just trace the pattern parts on wood, saw them out and assemble. To obtain the full-.size Grandfather's Clock Pattern #464, send $2 (add 25« per pattern for airmail delivery) by cash, check or money order to: Steve Ellingson, Sunday Gazette-Mail 'Pattern Dept. He Loves Loot TOKYO I/P) - Police arrested a 25-year-old bartender for a minor theft and found his 10-foot-square apartment crammed with about 3,000 items of burgled booty -- including four television sets, 15 cameras, 40 suits and 100 fountain pens. He said his "greatest thrill was to admire and enjoy my loot" and he couldn't bear to part with any of it.
