J3303 Another specialty at this place is its luncheon drinks. Old fashions and Manhattans are available for 25 cents between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 P . m . S t r a w b e r r y dai- quiries-perhaps the best- tasting drink going-go for 75 cents during the period For roast prime rib and old English atmosphere the Rib Room on St. Louis Street is t h e p l a c e . A n d Chateaubriand is the specialty at Beef'n B o u r b o n . Seafood abounds all over the city-it comes fresh from the Gulf. The Louis XVI French Restaurant features seafood prepared with the French touch. Shrimp Louis XVI is a favorite delicacy here. The Desire Oyster Bar gives an informal setting for oyster or shrimp loaves oysters on the half-shell and many others. Little cafes and sandwich shops line every street. My favorite is L'EspJanade Cafe, which features a roast beef sandwich (on a French bun, of course) and green salad with a special herb dressing. The recipe is secret, but the dressing very closely resembles oil and vinegar, thickened with mayonnaise, with tangy herbs added. It is superb. Wonderful places to stay while in New Orleans are · p l e n t i f u l . T h e c i t y ' s chamber of commerce will furnish a list of member hotels and motels. Any of these should be acceptable. We stayed a block and a half from Bourbon Street at a place called the Olivier Guest House, which was commended in 1969 as the best work of restoration in the French Quarter. Opera great Jenny Lind stayed at the Olivier each time she was in New Orleans. It cost us less than $20 per night. Nearly every hotel or motel features a swimming pool and private courtyard. The trees and flowers and iroi grillwork transport the vis! r back in years to the early days of this city's and our country's history. History permeates the Crescent City. THOMAS REALTY CO. The Cabildo was built in 1795 to house Spanish colonial government. The museum now houses collections of antiques, period costumes and documents, a slave block and prison cells where Pierre Lafitte was confined. The Louisiana Purchase was effected here. The Historical Pharmaceutical Museum was once Dufilo's Pharmacy. It houses an array of ancient prescriptions and drugs and one of the few known collections of voodoo powders. Goofer Dust, Easy Life Powder and John Conquer Root may be seen here. The old Ursuline convent is now open to the public and offers a visit to a building which has stood unchanged since 1750. Rooms where Ursuline nuns lived, prayed, t a u g h t and operated a hospital are open for tours. TRAVEL MOTEL AND APTS. OCUNVIIWIUCH l.uxurlniii.Kii«ni« ·|-h,-d Apr.. K.milv unil. »ilh Kilrhmrtlri. Here is the Musee Conti, a historical wax museum recently completed at $700,000, including more than $7,000 in antiques for the settings. It tells the story of N e w O r l e a n s i n chronological order, through 144 authentically costumed figures in 31 period settings exact in every detail. All these places are in the French Quarter, all within easy walking distance of any hotel or motel. Tours are available on the river and bayous and to restored plantations and gardens outside the city. The SS President is t h e w o r l d ' s l a r g e s t s i d e w h e e l s i g h t s e e i n g steamer. The MV Mark Twain covers more than 40 miles and exposes the swamp h i d i n g place of Lafitte. Bus tours and horse-drawn carriages will take the visitor all around the Quarter. Many of the tours . have a bar on board or include a stop at one, for in New Orleans--wherever you are--the party never really stops.
