Julv 13,1975 St ' Camp Gets Grant, Needs Nurses Bronco Junction, the summer camp for asthmatic children has received a federal grant to help train nurses. Now it needs the nurses to train. Dr. Merle S. Scherr, the camp's medical director, said approval of a grant for $5,990 came so late that there is now a problem with finding people to take advantage of it. The camp is looking for nurse educators, pediatric nurse practioners and nurses OPtN DAILY 10-10;SUNDAY 1-7 employed in community hospitals, clinics, school and home health programs. Scherr said they would be provided with room and lodging and educational materials at the camp for a week and that they would have the chance to work in close association with doctors specializing in treatment of allergies. The hope, Scherr said, is that the nurses will return to their home areas and will be able to help other medical practioners to identify and treat allergy victims. Scherr said that last year a student nurse from West Virginia University attended the camp and after graduation helped a doctor in a rural area create an allergy clink. Her experience was part of the reason for the training program, he said. Scherr said the grant would pay expenses for 32 nurses. They can come from anywhere in West Virginia and from the other states contained in federal health re- gioa 3. Tbe eacap started Jwae 22 and eads Aug. 17. It is located at Red House ia Putnam County. Further infanoatkw can be obtained by cwtacUBg Scherr or by calling the eamp. In a separate announcement, Scherr said open house would be held from 1:30 to 7 p.m. today at the camp. A bus will leave the Civic Center at 12:30 p.m. The program will include tours, a seminar on allergy and appearances by Dr. Mildred Bateman, director of the State Department of Mental Health and other doctors and psychologists. Scherr said the idea is to show the public what the camp is doing and how contributions for its support are being spent.
