2G--July 23, 1972 Sunday Gasette-Mail ·--Charleston, Wtst Virginia Bride's China Is Lifetime Investment why Say Wedding? One of the places where a fledgling homemaker's talent and creativity can really stand out is her table. And helping her garner the raves are the china and crystal she chooses as a bride. Picking their patterns to blend into a harmonious whole with her table silver isn't really difficult. The guidelines are simple and practical, points out the Jewelry Industry Council. Following them and the experienced advice of her jeweler will lead the bride to a table-top adventure filled with color, excitement, good taste and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Ifin* china has two basic design categories: traditional and contemporary. While most of today's brides still favor the traditional, their willingness to experiment and their love for bright, clear colors is finding expression in china designs. Blue, green, orange, earth tones, combinations of red, white and' blue, brown and black, black and white will undoubtedly catch the eye of today's bride searching for her china pattern. She will find the muted colors, the white-on- white, the gold and platinum bands are ever-present, too. The council cautions the bride to remember that her fine china is a lifetime investment. She should be positive her pattern choice will survive her long-term scrutiny. How does she know it's fine china? Her jeweler will demonstrate the following points of proof to her: *·· She should be able to see light through it. *· Balancing a plate on three fingers and tapping it with a pencil should produce a clear, bell-like ring. · The glass should feel smooth to the touch. · The cup should fit snugly and securely in the saucer. How much china does she need in the beginning? Four place settings of china are the minimum, if the bride and her husbtnd-to-be plan on any entertaining at all. In china, a plict setting has a dinner._ E lite* filad plate, bread and utter plate, teacup and saucer. How CM the bride make sure her china becomes a lifetime investment? By the care she takes of it. And happily, the proper way to care for fine china is as simple and easy as can be: *· Wash china as soon as possible after use. »· Wash each piece individually in warm water with mild soap. Do not use steel wool or soap pads. »· Rinse china thoroughly and drain. +· Store on a felt pad. Hang cups on hooks or place individually on shelves. The bride's crystal must pass a similar test of design perfection and timelessness. And just as her china patterns are alive with the colors she loves, so too will she find the newer crystal patterns. Blue, green, black, brown, colored bowls paired with white stems, textured crystal are newsy additions to the traditional high stems and deep cuts so many brides still favor. Whether she likes to mix the colors of her crystal and china, match them or experiment with her own flavorful coloration for her table, the bride wants the assurance that her crystal is of the same high quality as her china. This can be easily ascertained: *· The bowls and stems of' glasses should have uniform shape and balance. Held to the light, the glassware should not reveal waves or bubbles. »· Tapped gently with a fingernail, it should give off a clear, bell-like ring. The four minimum crystal place settings will each include a water goblet, sherbet, wine glass and salad plate. The bride's jeweler or department store registers her china and crystal patterns along with her silver patterns, to make wedding gifting more meaningful and within the range of the couple's desires and needs. Once fte bride's projected number of place settings in china and crystal ha,« been met, relatives and friends can indulge the pair with serving pieces and holloware created with today's informally entertaining young couples in mind. The original word was wed, which goes back to the days of purchasing a wife. "Wed" was the price--money, horses, cattle or property--which the bridegroom paid to the father of the bride .in exchange for the young lady's hand. When Anglo-Saxon children were betrothed by agreement between their parents,' the prospective bridegroom's family handed over a security or "wed" to seal the pact. Thus the "wedding" was pledging the troth of the bride to the young man who had her signed, sealed but not yet delivered.
