-F--July 23, 1972 Sunday Gazette-Mail 'Really Needed' Gift Most Appreciated MODEL LIVING ROOM IS A GUIDE Good Plan Followed Through "The most appreciated wedding gift you could give is a gift of h o m e fashions--things to help furnish the bride and groom's first home," advises James M. Wiley, director of home fashions for Burlington Industries. "Today's brides are very practical. Who needs a dozen sterling silver saltcellars when you haven't a chair to sit on? A sofa, a carpet, a bed, some draperies--these are what they really need." Most young couples find that. furnishing a first home from scratch on a minimal budget can be a frightening proposition. Many have to make do with second hand furniture and "cast-offs" the first few years Lucky is the couple whose thoughtful relatives and friends will pool their wedding gift monies to make a present of a key piece or two of home fashions. Recently Burlington House and Modern Bride, a national' bridal magazine, researched the problem and came up with a freshly decorated model home that serves as a guide to home fashons as wedding presents to the bride. * * * THE SMART bride would be well advised to start early and plan a basic color scheme in consultation with a home fashions store in her town. just as she often may work with a bridal consultant or a j e w e l r y store on her "pattern," she can make cer- Keep First Linen Purchases at Minimum Bridegroom's Mother May Want to Hostess Bridal Rehearsal Party While a wedding generates tremendous togetherness for the bride and her family, there is often one concerned person who feels completely left out of the excitement an engagement brings. Too often the mother of the groom is ignored by the bride. Yet, her son is g e t t i n g married, too. Including the future mother- in-law in some of the pre- wedding plans from the time of the engagement party, if there is one, is a gracious and courteous idea. Of course, she'll be asked to a shower of the bride-to-be. That's standard. The next thoughtful step could be to ask family and friends to invite both parents of the groom to parties that a r e b e i n g g i v e n . The wedding and shower gifts you receive as a bride-to- be will certainly include lots of linens, but there are many linen purchases you will want to make on your own. Even if you can afford it, however, don't buy more than you need. You will find that it's fun to freshen your collection with new purchases now and then. Begin your shopping with linens for the bedroom. Colored and printed sheets are popular choices today, but the wise girl will stick with traditional white because they can withstand years of washing without losing their original brightness. The percale sheet is preferable to muslin because it wears longer, but check to see if both warp and fillings are of even weight. If they aren't, the sheet won't lend itself to long wear. New fabrics that make ironing unnecessary are a godsend to the girl who prefers to do her own laundry. And fitted bottom sheets are a must as time-savers. Warmth and durability without too much weight are the prime considerations when choosing blankets. You will want to pick blankets that match your boudoir decor. Besides wool, Acrilan and Orion make good choices. Include a thermal blanket. Their trick is "breathing" and "reading" the temperature, managing to keep you warm enough when it's cold and cool enough when it's hot. COLOR SCHEME is important when choosing bathroom linens. But an eye for quality is the first requirement. Look for towels that are soft and spongy, checking to see that looped threads are long and woven closely and firmly. She can then alert one or two close friends and have them circulate the word among relatives and friends that she'd really perfer home fashions. Taking into consideration the fact that many first homes are equipped with "basic white" walls, the magazine planned a living room with white walls enlivened by a banana-yellow shag carpet. Own Texts Popular The "now generation" has created something of a revolution for itself by writing its own marriage vows. The wedding ceremony, which .had been a formal ritual unchanged for generations, has become highly personalized for many of today's young brides and grooms who script their own. Many of the clergy were the first to recognize these new beginnings. They accepted the couple's desire for deep and personalized spiritual involvement and understood that ...religious values were not c h a n g e d -- p e r h a p s even strengthened. The major seating pieces are in white. Strong accents of colors--yellow, orange, green--punctuate the scheme. The model home is intended as a guide of ideas, recognizing that not many young couples will be able to furnish a home all at once. Yet it emphasizes the importance of haying a well developed plan in mind and continuing to furnish toward this goal. DOUGHNUTS Made Fresh every day all during the day in the Agora carry-out.
