hives or lose consciousness. The cold investigators report good results in treatment with an antihistamine compound, cyprophepta- dine. Why do some people sensitive to poison ivy, poison oak or poison sumac break out in a rash, even a whole body rash, when they haven't been exposed to any of the poison plants? Physicians at the Hitchcock Clinic, Hanover, N.H., finally found the problem: raw cashew .nuts. When roasted,; cashews may produce no reaction, but raw they contain . a shell oil that is similar to the oleoresin that produces the rash from poison plants. Nerves or allergy? When a child" develops a barking, dry cough and no physical cause can be found, must it.:be psychogenic. or "nervous"? It may be allergic in nature. An example: A 10-year-old girl who coughed every 15 to 30 seconds wasn't helped by medication and coughed more when tense or excited (making it-seem especially likely that .the coughing was , ' "nervous"). When, however, tests showed sensitivity to molds and house dust, allergy treatment eliminated the cough. ON THE HORIZON. If current promising work continues to yield results, allergy sufferers may. have something almost ideal to look forward to. . 'At the University of Cali- fornia'School of.Medicine, San Diego, Dr. Robert N. Hamburger and a .medical team have identified and produced a fragment of protein, pentapeptide, that may occupy the site on body cells that allergens, or allergy- causing materials^ use. The pentapeptide, arriving there first, can usurp the sites so that when allergens come, they have no place to lodge and may thus be swept away by normal body-cleansing processes. More testing is needed, but in early trials the compound has worked ~ without undesirable side effects. If tests continue to be rewarding, this protein particle could be the way toward an easy anti- allergy treatment--a pill to stop allergies before they start. .NOW EVERY AMERICAN has the opportunity to possess an historic Gold Piece: It has been more than 40 years since Americans have been able to ac. quire a gold piece for just $20.
